Back to Back bad coaching hires Kiffen & Dooley

quote:

There's a general feeling out there that all of the SEC's so-called big boys are swimming in cash.

Then you stop and read Michael Smith's telling piece in SportsBusiness Journal on the financial woes of Tennessee's athletic department, and it's obvious that everybody in the SEC isn't just printing money.

According to Smith's story, Tennessee's athletic department is more than $200 million in debt, which is the most in the SEC. Moreover, Tennessee has reserves of just $1.95 million, which is the least in the SEC

they have paid out $18 million to fired coaches

Pretty simple. We fired Fulmer without having a solid hire in the bag to come in behind him. The rest is self explanatory. As far as recruiting goes, UT has an enourmous recruiting budget to accommodate its need to recruit out of state. Dooley just wasn't the guy to take advantage of it.

+1 as soon as UT get's a good coach in there - hopefully Butch is that guy - they'll be right back in the thick of things.

From the beginning, I didn't understand why Tennessee fans were so hyped up about Kiffin. The guy had no proven track record as a head coach. Kiffin was actually a worse coaching hire than Dooley because Tennessee was still a desirable job at the time he was hired. UT could have gotten Gary Patterson or Brian Kelly. They would be the premier program in the SEC East right now either of those coaches. Instead it'll be another lengthy rebuilding process and if Jones isn't the answer, it might be quite a while before they really recover.

Gus Malzahn would have been the hire that turned UT back into a power IMO. Not sure about Butch, he could be a good one as well. He seems to be recruiting well, to me at least. Not fair to judge him on this season, but next year he better at least be competitive with the big boys.

Problem is we couldn't. UT certainly tried. I think firing Fulmer made it an unappealing job to a lot people. Firing a university lifer like Fulmer always looks ugly even if its warranted. Could you imagine the shock if PSU had fired Paterno during his down years prior to the Sandusky Scandal?

You guys definitely could've gotten Sumlin though. Mike Hamilton was a big part of the current situation as well.

I'm always 50/50 on that one. I always feel that at the end of the day its the big time boosters like Haslams that really make that call since its coming out of their check book.
