Is that true, though? I know we take it as a given, especially in the SEC, that every program has a fleet of multi millionaire boosters willing to spend whatever it takes but how honestly accurate is that for some of these programs?

very good

It's definitely a banner year at the top for Va this year, but the total amount of talent is not an aberration. The state puts out a shitload of good players.

I'm actually glad Tenn sucks and they'll probably never be at their previous level again

Tenn and Nebraska have kinda similar predicaments

I agree with both of these statements.

i disagree

Nebraska sealed their fate as never being a National Power, again, when they went to the B1G.

Tenn gets them a coach, and they can be a power in the East again. But the other 2 clowns, put them in a really bad position. Jones has an uphill battle.

Yea, I am not sure Tenn has the money resources to keep up. I feel pretty confident they don't have the in state recruiting resources to keep up.

I'm not saying they will never make another run, but I don't think they have the "resources" of other teams to be consistent over the long run.

Nebraska and Tenn were both teams that were successful prior to the "internet age"

they also came to power when CFB wasn't as popular

Their states do not produce quality recruits, so they don't have a natural crop from which to draw. They are not national names any more

they may have teams here or there that will challenge for conference titles, but their days of being loaded with NFL talent and competing for NC's year after year are over

I think it's fair to say that Oregon has become the pre-eminent non-recruiting-base program in the country, surpassing Tenn and Nebraska. And as long as Nike is bankrolling Oregon, those other schools don't stand a chance. Especially Nebraska since PED testing is much more advanced.

So were they just simply lucky all those years they recruited well nationally?

lucky? I dunno. They probably paid kids and then when kids saw Tenn players getting sent to the NFL all the time, it probably helped even more

They were lucky in the sense that LSU hired Curley Hallman, USC hired Paul Hackett and Georgia hired Jim Donnan. That gave them the ability to dip into LA, NOLA, and Atlanta with relative ease.

Long precipitous decline after the 98 title, punctuated by a significant drop in its defensive play. The have never fully recovered. Hiring 2 imbeciles as head coach didn't help.
I also believe Fulmer to be a dirt bag and has probably done some things to sabatoge the program behind the scenes.

They also have a massive stadium and a rabid fan base, which help overcome some of the in-state talent issues.

Nebraska's a somewhat similar situation, but Tennessee is better off because they're surrounded by talent to the North East, East, South East, South and South West.

Nebraska's in no-man's land and in a new conference where they're really far from the population centers in the Great Lakes area and (with the addition of Rutgers and Maryland) the mid-Atlantic.

Even if they'd stayed in the B12, they're far from Texas and at a geographic disadvantage for TX recruits against 4 B12 teams in Texas, 2 in Oklahoma and 2 in Kansas, plus Missouri, Arkansas, and A&M in the SEC. Their history and resources could have helped close the gap against some teams, but I doubt Nebraska would be fielding top 10 recruiting classes in any conference.
