doesn't change the fact, they have, and can.
FWIW, Tayshaun at his best doesn't come close to Lebron. Quit being a pistons homer.
Tony Allen, BEST DEFENDER ALL TIME.

Nothing homer about it the Pistons team Prince was on are some the best defenses in NBA history

Majority of names being tossed around in this thread aren't even close to being the best defenders in NBA history.
Top 5:
Bill Russell
Hakeem the Dream
Dennis Rodman
Michael Jordan
Tim Duncan

Very few could lock their man up regardless of their positions like former great Bad Boy Joe Dumars, who was called "Joe D." That D stood for defense, which is the perfect nickname for this legend that had superb professionalism.
Dumars possessed excellent footwork, had nice basketball instincts, skills and determination to defend with a style like few have in this league. He was a versatile defender, as he was often called up to guard players from multiple positions.
He was most known for his phenomenal defense on Michael Jordan during the Pistons' title runs during the late 80's and early 90's. No one ever, as an individual defensive stopper, did a better job guarding Michael.
Even Jordan said that Joe Dumars was the toughest defender he has faced, and we all know how terrific Jordan was. This is enough to consider him in this debate.

Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo
AKA....Dikembe Mutombo.....in his prime you wasn't coming down the lane without getting a shot swatted or deflected.

Can we stop with this 5 positions stuff? Rodman and Lebron rarely if ever matched up with centers for more than a possessions during a game.
I'm not arguing that Lebron deserves to be on an all time list, but he guards a lot of different positions routinely due to the Heat's lack of depth. Any time Bosh misses a game Lebron ends up guarding 3-5 at a minimum

Pippen was a better defender and was the one who usually matched up with the other teams best player
It was more of a luxury to put Pippen on the other team's best player, rather than him actually being a better defender than Jordan.

Carmelo Anthony. How he has not been mentioned yet is beyond absurd.
Also, Iverson and Dirk have to be up there.

Bill Russell, Mutombo & Joe Dumars are all good ones for the top of the list. Shaq, Pippen & Rodman are probably up there too.

How has no one mentioned Sidney Moncrief yet?
Jordan respected the hell out of him:
He was a 2 time defensive player of the year and was actually the first winner ever of the award and won it back to back. He isn't in the HOF which might lead people to overlook him, but he was still a hell of a defender.

Among Moncrief's admirers was All-Star Michael Jordan who once described his on-court intensity to an L.A. Times reporter: "When you play against Moncrief, you're in for a night of all-around basketball. He'll hound you everywhere you go, both ends of the court. You just expect it."
