Babe Ruth???? Think about it Lester. Look at the numbers before he came along.

He was the 2nd most dominant in a team sport.

A lot of people have said choices I would agree with. I'll add Bo Jackson and Jack Nicklaus.
Bo might not have achieved as much in terms of career stats as a lot of these guys. However, he was like a mythological figure. Jack is the GOAT. There's just no other way to put it. When you're the GOAT in your sport, you have to be considered one of the biggest icons in sports history.

Saying Jordan was the most famous man on the planet doesn't mean shite.
We have millions of TV and the internet now, anybody can be famous.
How about...Japanese grunts 70 years ago - who never had TV or much education and of course no internet, shouting from caves on Iwo Jima and Okinowa...
"To Hell with Babe Ruth!!!!!"
Then you tell me about fame.
If Jordan ever becomes a rallying cry for a foreign country in attacking us, then we can talk genro.

I would say Babe Ruth. Jordan is a good choice, but he came at a time when it was easier to market athletes. Babe Ruth was the king in the sport that was watched and tracked by virtually every American.

You have s problem with Ruth as the answer???? If so??? You are fricking stupid.

Ali, Ruth, and Jordan. I'd say Jordan.

You have zero value of sports history.

Ruth did a lot of overseas stuff as well...
Did exhibition games in Japan, did tours throughout Europe for the soldiers, etc.

Why are you responding to me?
I said it was easily Ruth.
Japanese grunts in the caves shut off from society and the world in the midst of a war knew who Babe Ruth was.

I just did. Ruth was the most important sports figure in the last century because of what he was able to do as far as taking his sport to a level it's never been. Ruth did that. As great as Jordan or Wayne were, they just did not take their sport to the same level as Ruth did.

it's either ruth or ali ... jordan's a somewhat distant 3rd, imo ... jordan, as others stated, came along when technology and mass media could market someone of his caliber ... ruth came along when america was really establishing itself as a global power, so that sense of pride runs deep ... ali came along during the 60s and represented, for better or worse, the dynamics of that decade (and the 70s, to some extent) ...
think those two are more iconic than jordan ...

you do know they changed the baseballs and outlawed pitches like the spitball & the shine ball shortly before offense increased in the 1910's. Everyone started hitting more HRs and for higher batting averages. Babe Ruth just so happened to be the best of them.

Mark Spitz, Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Jesse Owens, and Muhammad Ali.

I think those putting Jordan anywhere but first really cannot grasp his popularity and greatness. Which is understandable, because it is that vast.
