Ruth was an icon for more than 80 years of the century. If we're talking about an American icon, I think you should judge then on their American popularity. I'm not worried about who's more popular in China or Africa when there is going to be an inherent bias towards modern athletes due to technology.

And why Arnold Palmer is way up there. He is an icon by the very definition.

Ruth, Robinson, Mays, Mantle...baseball was king early this century and those guys are legends.
