I think it comes down to Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, and Michael Jordan but there really are a lot of candidates

Ali, Ruth, and Jordan. I'd say Jordan.

I'm kinda interested if anyone wants to throw out a race horse as a possibiliy. But I don't know if any really have an argument

Michael Jordan
I think LeBron is a bigger star than we give him credit for especially with the NBA promoting more overseas. He is probably more popular than what Ruth, Ali, and Robinson were. More people could recognize him and tell you information about him. A lot of that has to do with this age and time of players. Or are we only talking being known in America, if so then Jordan.

Well ESPN said it was Babe Ruth...
Then Jordan
Then Ali
In their huge sports century poll and documentary series with the public and sportswriters.
Probably still has to be Ruth.
He dominated the headlines for 50 years...even when he was dead. Anybody would do anything in baseball, when it was still America's sport...and the writers would say..."yeah but Babe could do it better."
The country could not get over him and move on. Pure romanticism.

Jordan was arguably the most recognizable icon in the world, not just in sports

Babe Ruth... It's not really close.... He changed a sport FOREVER... Magic would be my second choice because of the way he played basketball. Nobody ever played the game the way he did when he came around.
