Ali fought all over the world and was well know even without the media of satellite television or internet.

+10000. I think Bryant Gumbel or some other black commentator said it best by remarking that people only started to love Ali after Parkinson's shut him up.

I would usually say MJ. But Jesus, my GRANDMOTHER actually started watching golf and pulling for Tiger. I'm not saying that makes him neccessarily more appealing, but damn, its an argument!

Tiger Woods is closer than you think. Jordan carried a sport that was made golden by the Lakers/Celtics. People like to imagine Jordan was the NBA but they forget that Magic, Kareem, Bird, Barkley, Malone, Pippen, Stockton, McHale, Worthy, and Drexler all played in Jordan's prime.

Tiger Woods took a sport that was DOA and he single-handedly BECAME golf.
