You might be right in basketball, but I don't know if I buy the same logic with football. The nature of the game and the role of coaches are very different between the two sports. Coaches have much more play by play impact on football, since every play is impacted by the coaches play calling (and personnel choices). Not so much in basketball. The basketball coach sets overall strategy, perhaps,and has control over who is on the court, has overall has less control or impact on the flow of the game.
Of course I am not saying talent is not hugely important in football, but I think it is a combination of coaching and talent of the athletes. I don't know whether it is 50-50 or 48-52, but it is a close question.
In the college game, raw great talent, with poor coaching will not prevail over good but excellently coached talent most of the time. Of course the better the talent (speed, strength, and smarts) the less excellent the coaching has to be, but in a conference with lots of talent, better coached teams with equal talent to that of their opponents will more often than not prevail.

Most of those talented football players were coached by somebody who was a pretty good coach before 2001. Most of the players regarded as talented have been well coached by somebody along the way. Otherwise, you probably would never have heard of them and they wouldn't have been highly recruited. Talented college players tend to come from well-coached high school teams. Most of those 2001 players had been on the team coached by Coker's predecessor for 1 to 3 years before 2001. But if those 2001 Miami players had not been reasonably well coached before 2001, they would not likely have been nearly as successful. Coaching isn't just what happens on gameday or what happens in a single season. Great players are generally developed by good coaching. Raw talent without proper development will not prevail for long. It takes both.

Talent disparity isn't that great across the board to fellow Division 1 athletes in a major conference to the extent the superior team nullifies their advantage. USC turned the ball over 5 times and Booty played the majority of the game with a broken finger and threw 4 interceptions.
I don't care how talented you are...that's shifting the playing field.

Anyone questioning the impact coaching has in college can just look at Arkansas as an example. What a fall from glory.

Hey, I appreciate greatly everyone's input on this. There were a # of different directions this thread could have gone--I was initially hoping at least a few posters would have given their views of coaching vs. talent regarding high school football, but thanks and I realize most posters here follow college & pro football more. I even see there was a reference to basketball as well, so thanks everyone. Though this thread was in More Sports Board, it had more responses than any one I have ever started.

If you don't have talent in the trenches, you're not winning many football games, no matter who your coaches are.
