Which is most important--good coaching or talented football players?

I realize the championship teams have lots of both in most cases. But many years ago, I heard the old expression, "A great QB can make a mediocre coach look very good." I wonder if they were referring to Brett Favre in his college days, making Curley Hallman look like a much better coach than he turned out to be. I believe this is the case with a certain West Texas high school team this season, who finished 0-10 last year, but has won its first 3 games, with a highly regarded sophomore starting QB that I think should have been the varsity starter last season. But please, share your views on this and let me know.

An average coach can get by with skilled players, but a good coach will get the most out of average players.

Pick your poision.

Depends: College is about talent first then coaching second. Gene Chizik won a National Title on talent and Les Miles is a great recruiter but average at best coach.

NFL is about coaching and having a QB.

If 1 is terrible the other is useless, but given the choice players make plays.

I would rather have talented players. Coaching is obviously very important but without talent, the coach is screwed.

College football is all about how good you can recruit, pro football is pure coaching because everyone is damn good. And yes, Leslie Miles is an average coach at best, but he does a good job of letting LSU sell itself in terms of recruiting. A monkey could be taught to recruit studs to LSU

It's tough to say because there are so many factors like how coaches develop players. Particularly in college.

For example, Auburn has had great recruiting classes but is terrible because the players aren't being developed and the program has no direction, so that part of the argument lends toward the coaching.

You're just wrong. LSU's players love miles and love playing for him. He's a great recruiter.

I'm sure a 5-2 bowl record and 2 NC appearances is all because of the talent he has. He obviously is a mediocre coach. A combined bowl game score of 215-108 is very average.

GTFO, that shite doesn't work anymore

If you are ranking them, then talent is #1. That's not to say coaching isnt important, it is, but you still need talent.

Hahaha chalk up 2007 to Sabans MNC tally, LSU won that year despite Miles, losing at home to 2 shitty teams? Give me a break. Also, what good bowl wins does LSU have? Beat a pisspoor ND, GT, and Miami, a decent but outclassed Texas AM and then got asses handed to them by Bama, not to mention losing to a bad Pedo State team. And I never said LSU players don't like playing for miles, he's a players coach through and through.

Players, easily.

Players win all the time with coaches who aren't regarded as good coaches,

How often does the great coach take shite talent to a title? Never.

Obviously both are very important but IMO a team will go farther (probably 9-3 or so) with great players and mediocre coaching. A great coach with so so players can easily lose 5 games.

Larry Coker was one bad call away from winning back to back national championships.
