What is your opinion of Jon Gruden as a coach?

He was 38-26 at Oakland and 57-55 at Tampa Bay. When you put those numbers together his overall winning percentage is right at 54%. Despite these average numbers, he's among the most coveted unavailable head coaching candidates on the market every single year.

Yeah, he won a Super Bowl in 2002, but let's not act like that Super Bowl was his. That was Tony Dungy's system and roster that he inherited. He turned that franchise into a viable commodity. Gruden came in, went 12-4 his first year and won the Super Bowl, and then preceded to slowly sink the franchise that Dungy had built up. Take out that first year and Gruden is 45-51 with the Buccaneers. Those aren't exactly Vince Lombardi numbers.

Maybe I'm being too harsh. What say you guys?

But then you could argue that the Raiders team he beat in the Super Bowl was his system.

ETA: But with that said, he's a decent coach who gets an inflated status because of his personality.

He's Jason Garrett with a random SB title from a team he had zero hand in building tossed into the middle of his career.

Underrated. Made crappy rich Gannon into a very very legit qb.

Which might explain why the score was so lopsided. 49-21 I believe was the final tally in that game. He knew absolutely everything about the Raiders and used that to his advantage.

I'll always be his biggest fan because of his years with the Raiders. I loved those teams he built. Everyone laughed when he went hard after Rich Gannon, and we all saw how that turned out. I think he's a great coach.

Worst. Best. What does it matter when you're a known commodity?

Gannon was crap. Make no mistake about it. Gruden turned him into a stud.

He's strictly an offensive-centric coach but did revive the Oakland Raiders to contenders for a short period and coached a Jeff Garcia-Buccaneers team to the NFC playoffs when most of that 2002 defense crew was aging/gone. His HC life was short but he did coach his teams well and completed what Tony Dungy started yet couldn't accomplish. Great coaching mind, very smart and dedicated, photographic memory-type when it comes to football nomenclature and strategy.

Right, so now the question is if you think any mediocre coach other than Gruden at that time takes the Bucs to the Super Bowl and if they do, do they beat a Gruden coached Raiders team?
