quote:
“First of all, Red Barber had said to me when I first started, ‘I don’t want you to get close to the players, because if you get too close to the players, it will change your descriptive powers. Suddenly you see your man make an error, and you’ll try to make up for it and it would become a twisted broadcast.’
“The one fellow I got close to, despite Red’s rulings, was Ralph Branca. And Ralph was going to marry after that game—the next week. And he and [his fiancée] Ann and I went around the world together, but that’s another story. But I was closer to them, and I had a couple of dates with Ann’s roommate, and so, we got closer.
“So when the ball was hit, there was a home run, and I instinctively looked down at the club box because my friend Ann was there. And I watched her very deliberately, carefully open up her purse, take out a handkerchief, close the purse, open the handkerchief and bring it up to her face. And I really felt sorry for her and for everybody.
“And then in those days, in order to get to the clubhouse, you had to walk all the way to centerfield, and you went up the stairs and went in the door. And then there were, like, three steps to go up to the next level. And there was my pal [Branca], sprawled on the steps, head down, arms extended. And I actually had to tiptoe over him. So, it was really tough.
“Anyway, it was deathly quiet and I thought, I can’t hang out here. So I went up into a trainer’s room, and there was Jackie [Robinson] and Pee Wee [Reese]. Just the two of them. Nobody else there. I walked over and didn’t say a word—just sat down in a chair and it was silent. “And then Pee Wee said, ‘You know, Jack, the one thing I just don’t understand?’ And Jackie said, ‘What, Pee Wee?’ He said, ‘Why this game hasn’t driven me crazy.’”

Man I would kill for a chance to sit and talk life with Vin Scully

Anytime they do a live look in on MLB or Fox Sports, etc. with the Dodgers, I always leave it on and watch/listen to Scully. Reminds me of my childhood watching TWIB on Saturday mornings. He is a true American treasure, still sharp as a tack, and is the only voice in the booth. He paints a beautiful picture and it is just a joy to slow down and listen to him a few more times.

He's an American institution.

"How About That?' Loved Mel Allen, even though he was a Yankee broadcaster. He was another great voice of baseball.

Anyone else read the story and "hear" it in Vin's voice?
It's amazing that there are usually two or three guys in the booth calling games, and Vin is all by himself and never misses a pitch all while telling great stories and interesting facts. He will be sorely missed when he retires.

The story was excellent, and Vin Scully is a true cultural treasure. I would put Ernie Harwell up there close to Vin in the way he commanded the language, enunciated cleanly and just seemed like a friend in the booth. Vin has him when it comes to longevity though, and for my money goes down as the GOAT for broadcasters in any sport.

I've said this before, but Vin Scully's beauty was that he knew when to keep his mouth shut and let the pictures do the talking.
Like after Ray Knight scored on the Mookie Wilson grounder/Bill Buckner error in the 1986 World Series.
I think he was silent for a full three minutes while Shea Stadium went bonkers.

Which bunghole keeps downvoting Vin Scully

I love Vin to death but he misses most pitches now. Even Clayton's CBs are 'change ups'. It's sad to see the end coming but it was such a fun listen for so long.

Would love to sit and talk with him. Loved me Ernie Harwell but Vin is incredible too.

To be fair, how many play by play announcers are even capable of identifying pitches that the pitchers are throwing? Most keep it to a minimum calling pitches breaking balls or off-speed pitches or fastballs.
