The course is defenseless without consistent winds
If there is anything to bitch about, that is it

From the enormous fairways to the giant greens to the fricking sound of an airplane flying over the whole time to the crowd screaming random bullshite, this was an absolute joke of a US Open. I can't believe people are defending it.
Every 2 minutes they cut to somebody else putting for birdie and the lead. 30 ft puts going in with ease. 3 woods stopping on the greens like they were wedges. Justin Thomas shooting a 63. This entire event should have an asterisk next to it in the US Open record books.

For all the bellyaching by the players, Chambers Bay was a great first time venue. I definitely think it should be in the rotation. Certainly over Erin Hills.
I personally didn't find this open that enjoyable. The most cringeworthy part was the Fox anchors trying to pump it up constantly to keep people watching. "With this wind, THIS is the course people wanted to see" - anytime you're having to constantly validate the course, you know there's an issue

The region is dotted with lakes. That water had to come from somewhere. If there was a week of no rain you would have got your tougher course. PS: Na's a jerk. Some vag whines about us open setup every year.

Moreover, we might as well be playing the Dural Open folks
We? How'd you finish this weekend?

As long as they can fix the greens.
Good putts, just like good shots should be rewarded. You shouldn't get lucky based off a bounce on those cauliflower greens.

The ball and equipment needs to be dialed back. Pretty soon you will need 10000 yd courses.

No they don't. Equipment is fine as is.

The biggest takeaway I got from watching the Open at Erin Hills is that the fairways seemed unusually wide. Hell one fairway was something like 78 yards wide. The courses I play on around here aren't that wide in most places.
That course could have been set up with far less room for error off the tee. Make guys pay for hitting driver a little off the mark.
I guess the USGA felt the fairway bunkers would cover that but players had plenty of room to avoid them on most holes. It really was one of the most boring final rounds of an Open I've ever seen.

If par was 70, here are your scores for the top 10
1---(-8
t2---(-4)
t2---(-4)
4---(-3)
t5---(-2)
t5---(-2)
t5----(-2)
8---(-1)
t9---E
t9---E
t9----E
If they simply did that, which changes zero about the actual course, nobody is complaining today. FACT

That 8 people were below 280 in soft conditions?
Just like the traditional US Open setup of Congressional?
I get where you are going here. Relative to par is just a arbitrary number. Total strokes is a better way to look at it. But I think the main issue people are having is that historically the media and fans use relative to par instead of total strokes when comparing years.
Example. Tiger wins in 2000 with 272. -12 and 15 strokes better than anyone else and no other players even close to being under par.
Koepka wins yesterday with 272 but there were 30 other guys under par.
Rory wins in 2011 with a 268 and -16 but only one person is within 10 strokes and only 19 other guys under par.
Koepka isn't in the same neighborhood as those performances.
This win is being called record breaking. It really isn't except for the fact that the course played to par 72. They play this to 71 or 70 and the comparison changes to a better reflection of what has always been "historical".
The other issue was that the fairways were freaking runways. I can land the ball on fairways that wide. One of the things about the open has always been how really good players wouldn't crack 90 on an open setup.
It was the absolute last US Open that Lefty should have skipped.
It just wasn't what a US Open is and it feels like a cop out to some people. They feel like the USGA is artificially creating "history" and storylines.

Doubt it will be back anytime soon.

Well, not until 2026 when they have a new rotation.

Obviously, but Mike Davis and the USGA have a lot of time and energy invested in Erin Hills. Davis has said (paraphrasing), "we'll be long gone and this course will still be hosting major tournaments."
It will host again within the next 15 years.

Maybe down the line but 2030+isn't anytime soon. It won't be the first cou0le of courses announced for 2026 and beyond.

Would you have typed that if Jordon, Jason, Rory, Phil, DJ, Adam, Justin, and Sergio were dogfighting it out instead of a bunch of guys we really have never heard of?

I wonder how much TV ratings influence the USGA when it comes to course selection and course setup? Fox needs all the help they can get. Just a guess on my part, but I bet Fox prefers a winning score of -16 at Erin Hills to say +2 at Oakmont.
I think true golf enthusiasts prefer a -2 and such. However I think the general public who tunes in to watch majors prefer much lower scores.
