Bill Belichick is the greatest NFL coach of all time, but even he couldn’t match Landry’s streak.

From 1966 to 1985, Landry didn’t have the benefit of one primary QB. He had to cycle through Don Meredith, Craig Morton, Roger Staubach, Danny White, and Gary Hogeboom.

Staubach was great, and Dandy Don and Danny White were very good, but he never had the GOAT.

Um, different eras, Landry would not have 10 in a row with the cap there is today.

No chance

Look at the Steelers of the 70's - the draft was everything because you could keep those players forever and pay them whatever you wanted.

The Rozelle Rule stopped star players from switching teams as free agents unless the club signing the free agent paid handsomely to the club losing the free agent.

It basically was punishing clubs for pursuing so-called "free agents" so they didn't - and clubs could resign their stars at their price and not the open market.

In 1976 the Court found that the rule:

Deters clubs from negotiating with and signing free agents.

Decreases players’ bargaining power in contract negotiations.

Players were denied right to sell services on open market.

Absent the rule, there would be more movement in interstate commerce of players from one club to another.

So basically once you built a dynasty through the draft, you had it for life. So the teams that hit with the draft were set.

You could actually say it's easier now to maintain a dynasty with the free market and constant buying and selling of free agents. You just have to pony up the cash and keep your players happy...and if you miss on the draft, you still have the open market for trade and free agents.

Bill obviously needed Brady. His record before and after Brady is mediocre.

Didn’t new England’s entire defense opt out of playing this year? But still count against the cap so they couldn’t sign many players to replace them?

That may be partially why they aren’t as good

Landry’s streak covered 3 different eras. It started during the Lombardi era of the 60’s, through the 70’s, into the Bill Walsh, Joe Gibbs, Ditka, and Parcells era of the 80’s.

Landry was his own DC trying to stop the Lombardi Sweep in the 60’s, and also the OC matched up against Belichick when he was DC of the Giants in the 80’s.

The Steelers drafted the best class in NFL history in 1974. A rule that was overturned in 1976 isn't what allowed them to keep those guys.

The Cowboys were notorious for being cheap bastards and not renegotiating contracts. See Dwayne Thomas.

If Lombardi wouldn’t have cheated and turned off the underground heaters at the field prior to that playoff game (ice bowl) Dallas would have won that game and it would have been called the Landry Trophy after they won the Championship that year.

Landry is the GOAT.

Isn't it something like Bill coached in 12 of 50 Super Bowls by the time we reached Super Bowl 50? That's almost 25% of all Super Bowls.

Bum Bright was going to fire Landry before he sold the team to Jerry Jones. He offered to fire him after he sold the team, but Jerry manned up and handled that aspect.

No one can deny that firing Landry and bringing in Jimmy Johnson was the right move in 1989.

I think Bill’s streak is more impressive, even with the GOAT.

Back then, teams could put together insane defensive units and keep them for as long as the players were productive. Plus the styles of play favored the defense.

It helped both coaches that they played in divisions that for the most part sucked. The Cowboys had to contend with the the Redskins, but that was usually it. It almost guaranteed six wins a year.
