phil won 5 titles without MJ and he never had the player of the generation for any of those 5 like pop did

I'd say TD is the closest thing to a modern day Bill Russell. He wasn't as dominant as Shaq (Wilt for Bill) but he was the most important player for more than a decade on the most consistently outstanding team of his era.

One more title and he ties Jordan.
