This decision could provide a template for other players who don't want to play college basketball and hope instead to move from high school straight to the NBA

Dont really see the benefit of staying in HS another year instead of going to college for a year.

In fact it seems more kids try to graduate early, reclassify, go to college and get in the NBA earlier

Players not being able to come out of High school and go pro is incredibly dumb. He has to go away at some point soon.

And if he's smart with his money, he still would make enough to set up his family for generations. I would gladly accept a 7-8 year stint in the NBA coming in as a top 10 pick.

It's actually been incredibly smart move that has improved the overall health of the NBA.

and Silver wants to raise it more, which I am all for.

Yeah, 2 years would be better. I don't really see the point of 3 years like in the NFL, but it would improve the college game. They should either stretch it to 2 years, or go to the MLB model and be straight from HS or 3 years.

Doesn't he have some AAU type advisor? He'll fleece Thon Maker pretty good.

The rule is for the benefit of the teams in the NBA.

It is very risky to draft a kid out of high school, yet they don't want another team to snag a kid with a lot of potential.

Seeing what a kid can do in college lets teams get a better look at prospects.

So they're punishing teams with better scouting histories.

I don't understand teh situation based on the link, what is Athletic Institute? Is it a high school or not?

Never heard of a guy playing 5 years of high school.

It's a prep school, think he technically graduated last year and wasn't eligible.

The MLB model is perfect. Straight out of high school or JUCO. If you attend a 4 year university it's 3 years.

So if he played 4 years and graduated, on what basis was he granted a 5th year to play basketball without going to school?

Dont know how it works in Canada but I don't think he played HS basketball. It's like Hargrave for football, they have a HS team and a prep team for guys who didn't qualify out of HS.
