All you have to do is look at how the perception of Dirk COMPLETELY changed in so many people's minds before they even won this championship. A few great series' this year and he's was getting Bird comparison's without even having a ring.

lebron disappeared in the fourth quarter because he was scared to fail .. LOL at people in this thread arguing the point that were maybe five or six years old when MJ won his first championship and never watched the guy play in that window .. let's compare lebron to bill russell too if this is the case ..

people ALWAYS brought up that quote

it was something like, "i've won at every level i've played on, except high school and college"

which means his early developmental period was in the NBA and not college. i don't see the point

His development has been accelerated when compared to Jordan's. He played against better competition, had longer and more in depth practices, better nutrition and training regimens.

3 years playing in the NBA =/= 3 years playing in college.

and if that was a better measure of comparison than age, it would mean more

The thing is it does mean more because the status quo in 1981 wasn't drafting high school players, college was the best way to develop.By 2003,AAU produced NBA ready players. So players were getting better developmental coaching at a younger age and the power agents(greedy scumbags) who want all the young players in the league in order to collect more money established a new status quo where HS players making the jump was the norm.

So in conclusion it is a more fair comparison from players of college playing era to a high school jump era.

It's over now,you lost.

i don't disagree. NBA > college

so what did lebron gain? a yaer at most?

lebron at 19 wasn't a dominant force.

Dude all the comparisons were between Shaq and Hakeem. No one said Shaq couldn't get it done. He was an NBA rookie of the year. They were just saying Hakeem outplayed him. What was that, Shaq's 4th year in the league?

i know this

but they still need those years from 18-21/22 to develop. most players essentially have a first development until 21/22, then the development flattens out and they increase more gradually until 24/25 when they start their prime. then they get 4-5 years at that level and start to decline around 30

that similar path is followed by the vast majority of NBA players, regardless of origin (even jordan)

jake .. you are trying to suck blood out of a turnip here .. there is NO comparing lebron to MJ at this point .. MJ HAD to take the game over and everyone on the court knew it and he STILL took the game over .. the queen has two marquee teammates that had to be accounted for at all times and he STILL couldn't take a game over in crunch time ..

in orlando, not in los angeles in that period where kobe had to learn to be #2 behind shaq

EVERYBODY knew once they got their alpha/#2 set, they'd run through the NBA, but it took a few years and shaq took a ton of heat

This will ultimately be the case with LeBron, but I just hate the knee-jerk historical comparisons that come after every big performance. He disappointed in the Finals unlike MJ (unfair comparison for anyone), it's a blemish on his resume, but all will be forgotten if he kicks arse next year.

A good bit of HS players went to the NBA before 2003.

PLayers who make the jump directly from High School to the NBA are accelerated. They improve faster, but they also wear out more quickly than those who spent time in college. Lebron will not being playing into his mid thirties. He will have played too many games and his body will be shot.

I wish that Brian Windhorst would come clean with his opinion on this. He knows Lebron better and is closer to the team than any other member of the media.

He went the fatigue route after the 8 point game, but I don't buy that.

and he won't .. what motivates and drives guys like james today is totally different from what drove MJ, bird, and magic 20 to 25 years ago ...
