If you show some random person those number with no name next to them, they will pick the second player most of the time

If they are familiar with basketball statistics they'd not only know who it was they'd also consider that statement worth debating. The first player's considerably higher field goal percentage is very meaningful. Most coaches would probably take the first player because of that difference in efficiency.

We'll see how it shakes out tho. There are still games to be played which will settle the playoff seeds and perhaps determine the MVP winner.

Durant will possibly make the 50-40-90 club again. That is absurdly efficient.

I agree that the FG% is a very important statistic and washes out the 3 or 4 ppg difference. I'd say KD has a slight overall edge, but if MIA gets on another winning streak like last year's and LJ keeps this pace up, it could change fast.

Because it isn't the conference. The Heat have dominated the West this year and taken games off against bad teams in the East.

So KD and the thunder haven't also dominated the west since they are actually sitting at the 1 seed in that actual conference?

And taking games off still counts against your season. Can't just throw those games out

Nobody would be taking those games out. The thread of the discussion was the contention that the Heat might end up with the NBA's best record (if they pass the Pacers) only because they play in a weak conference.

If you look at the games played this year that's obviously not what is going on. The Heat (at least the other week) had the best record in the NBA against the best teams in the West. If they are losing games to teams like the Sixers, Nets, and Celtics then that feeds into my annoyance with them for being a lazy team there's relatively little point in watching early in the regular season - but is obviously because they are taking games off.

But it doesn't tell the whole story. LeBron can afford to pick his spots. KD hasn't really had that luxury for majority of the season with Westbrook out.

They get to play shitty Eastern conference teams 4 and 3 times a year. They only see the Western Conference teams twice a year.

They should have the leagues best record.

They have a great record against good teams and a shitty record against bad teams.

That definitely plays a role in having the best record...

Durant is the man. He's an amazing shooter and a phenomenal player to watch. I would have no problem with anyone picking him as this year's MVP because I don't think there's a big difference in performance between him and Lebron this year.

Having said all those things. A .580 field goal percentage from Lebron is off the charts disgustingly good. The difference is obviously in the 2 point fg% - which for Lebron is .642 and for Durant is .548. The difference in 3 point fg% is much smaller - .396 for Durant and .364 for James.

I stand by my earlier argument. I think most coaches would take the guy with significantly higher field goal percentage because that advantage in efficiency means more points per possession.

You have to consider the amount of shots taken as well

comparing those numbers, this is when they go into team record, ts%, and PER imo.

It's so damn even this year that it is truly difficult to pick. (similar to when kobe vs. CP3, cept by end of the year CP3 definitely had the edge)

that doesn't change much in this case

for a guy averaging almost 60% from the field (and over 60% from 2 point fg range) it would take him only about three more shots a game for him to get 4 points more a game.
