Here's a twist for you - on a kickoff, the team kicking the ball is STILL ON OFFENSE and still has possession of the ball. By rule, they are allowed a free kick. On a free kick, the ball is live and anyone can recover it once it has traveled 10 yards (the receiving team can recover it at any time). If the ball (which is a live ball) goes out of the end zone, the ball is awarded to the defending team at the 25 yard line.

It's literally treated the same as a fumble - a live, loose ball that is able to be recovered by anyone goes out of the end zone. Result is a touchback for the defending team.

Not many people know that rule. A kick is a kick is a kick.

Are you an official by chance?

I'd also wouldn't mind seeing the down by contact rule in the NFL nixed. Make the defense actually tackle the ball carrier.

Definition of a catch in football. Possession and 2 Feet/1 other body part down equals catch.

No, not an official. But I try to learn the rules in an effort to understand the game rather than just yell at the screen when I don't understand it.

The fumble out of the endzone touchback is such a consistent and fundamental piece of football that is related to so many other concepts; I never understand why people single it out but ignore how many other football concepts are tied to it...like the kickoff!

There should be no such thing as auto first downs in football. If it’s 3rd and 19, a defensive holding call should make it 3rd and 9. A facemask should be tacked on to the end of the play and if the yardage is still short, it’s 4th down.

Didn't go through all 9 pages so SIAP, but if a golf ball ends up in a divot (even a filled one) in the fairway, the player should get a free drop. I've always thought it is ridiculous for a player to be penalized by something manmade after a good drive.

I'd like to see any form of extra points after touchdowns wiped from football.

Nothing kills the excitement and momentum generated by a touchdown that the kick attempt, afterwards. It's an awkward change of pace and a real downer.

I don't like two-point conversions, either. They take away from the rush of the touchdown, sort of like if Indiana Jones had shot the sword-spinning baddie a second time after he killed him.

OT should have to be further up and more even with the rest of the OL. They are allowing them to play too far back.

Also, college is better with new rules. Love cfb but games were getting stupid long.

Games have been shortened by an average of 6 minutes this season so far. I'm sure that 6 minutes has changed your opinion on games being too long.

QB’s have nothing to lose if they just chunk it away

But they do. It's a spot foul and loss of down (in college, NFL is 10 yds from LOS). Ball goes to the spot they released it from, which is behind the LOS. So it's just like a sack without a defender getting credit for a sack.

The only rule that needs to changed in my opinion is the Fumblerooski rule. I want them to be able to go back to the intentional fumble part of the rule, instead of it being illegal. You know have to hand it off directly to the OL instead of leaving it on ground.

I’ve always hated this. If the offense holds on first down it isn’t an automatic fourth down. Auto first downs seem way to advantageous to the offense.

How? It’s part of the touchdown. It’s a +1 or +2 that you only have the chance at if you get a +6, but lots of games are decided by converting the +1 or not

Clemson should have gotten the death penalty that they deserved. Just maybe they should be allowed a women's vollyball team, although they would cheat that thing to death.
