It really doesn't bother me and I've just been laughing at how much this has blown up in their face. Watching him get so deep and emotional on espn about his girlfriend was classic

I think Te'o exaggerated the relationship to the world, but was no mastermind.
My guess:
Tuiasosopo creates Lennay Kekua, introduces Arizona Cardinals player to a woman posing as her at party in Hawaii. She is actually someone else obviously.
Seeing the potential for hijinx, Twitter account for Lennay created by Tuiasosopo.
Tuiasosopo pegs Manti as the next target.
Tuiasosopo's woman is hired to be Manti's phone contact.
shite gets real from Manti's perspective. He grows feelings.
Tuiasosopo knows Manti wants to meet in person, throws in terminal illness so the relationship can end. Misdirects him to Hawaii twice where Lennay never shows.
Stanford plays ND, so they'd have to meet, right? Nope, death by Leukemia.
Tuiasosopo trolls ND woman "Jan" @ USCw/ND game, tells her Samoan girl with him has Lupus.

I think Te'o embellished his relationship, and maybe even lied to himself, or withheld details from others to make it more real.
However, I doubt he planned this to prop himself up. If he did, I'll give him credit for being an amazing, misleading POS
