BREAKING: MLB commissioner Rob Manfred told MLBPA executive director Tony Clark on Friday that if the sport doesn’t do a better job of managing the coronavirus, it could shut down for the season, sources tell ESPN.

quote:

It sounds as if the commissioner’s office could contemplate a cancellation or pause as soon as Monday. The hope is that the Marlins-related outbreak will be contained and that the Cards won’t have further positive tests. The worst-case scenario would be for members of still other organizations to come down with infections.

It seems there’s also a broader concern with the way players are behaving on and off the field — with some government officials evidently conveying issues to the league. Rule-breaking behavior captured on cameras doesn’t make for a good look, though in many cases it’s not especially risky for transmission. But it sounds as if league officials have identified high-risk actions occurring elsewhere in the ballpark and away from the field of play.

Shocking.

What could have possibly went wrong with baseball's plan?

They knew this would happen which is why they were supposed to have taxi squads and other players available, however, they are not using them for this

Play a World Cup style tournament in a bubble for a month or so and be done with it.

Why don't they sanction the fricking Marlins instead of shutting the whole thing down?

Manfred again just wants to bow to the fricking cheapskates that didn't want a season to begin with.

This is not about player safety.

Then keep them out of Clubs and Speak Easy's. MLB has an army of Security, it's time to put it to work.

All this is doing is pointing out that the cheap arse owners wanted to use the player pools as development tools for their top prospects without the cost associated with having the minor league season.

That's why I think the Marlins should be required to play through all of this and burn service time for their prospects.

The marlins need to be nuked. The players apparently completely disregarded everything and went out to bars and clubs and then wanted to play after getting positive results. The league needs to do something to them

Wouldn't have worked, too many teams, too many people... This isn't the NBA with 12 man rosters you are talking 30-45 players per team. Plus coaches and other team people.... No area had enough indoor stadiums much less stadiums.
