The Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals are ramping up talks about a trade that would send star outfielder Andrew McCutchen to D.C., sources who have spoken with both teams told ESPN's Jayson Stark. The Nationals, according to one executive, would like to make this deal Thursday, so they would be free to nontender shortstop Danny Espinosa before Friday's tender deadline. If McCutchen joins the Nationals, he would play center field, which would move Trea Turner to shortstop and leave Espinosa without a position. Pittsburgh is reportedly seeking a package that includes top prospects in exchange for the 30-year-old outfielder. McCutchen, 30, is signed through 2017, when he is owed $14 million, and the Pirates hold a $14.5 million club option for 2018.

My God Turner, Murphy, Cutch, Harper would be an insane top of the lineup.

Cutch for 14 mil is a steal as well.

He would certainly get a lot to swing at with Murphy and Harper behind him

I hope this doesn't happen. It would suck for parity in baseball.

Meh, parity in baseball exists more than the other sports. We see powerhouse lineups get beat by pitching often...damn near happened in the World Series this year.

Nice to see the Bucs are content to fade away back into oblivion again after a 3 year stretch of decency.

Cutch is fading, but still much better than what the Nats have dealt with the past few years.

Rumors from the Nats side is Robles (stud) and either Ross or Lopez.

If giving up Robles, hope it is a lesser pitcher.

Pirates are going to get pennies compared to what they would have gotten before last year. Cutch has a big decline this past year, plays a bad centerfield, and only has two years left on the deal.

I doubt they will find a partner that will give them something better than Robles as the headliner.

Yep dude was the worst CF in baseball last year on defense. He also graded out below average on base running and is not a threat to steal anymore. I think he can still hit .270 25 HRs .360 OBP.

Wouldnt count out the Pirates after they trade Cutch. Would still have Polanco, Marte, and Kang in the lineup. Josh Bell will be a full time starter this year, and the trade will open up a spot for their top prospect Austin Meadows. Cole, Taillon, and Glasnow would be at the top of the rotation as well.

They will be very young, but they have the talent to be right back in the hunt.

this is what makes it a no go for me. he is just no longer the player that he has been and its not that hes just regressed a little, he is full blown one of the worst in baseball in what used to make him so versatile

Do the Pirates know something? It would be dumb to trade him after his worst season unless you get a kings ransom.

103 OPS+ Yeesh.

Or the decline is real, and he has an even worse season next year, and they get nothing for him. They arent going to resign him, and they have Meadows waiting to take his spot. You trade him now while you can still get a descent haul.

Yea I get that he looks to be on the decline but I can't help but reflect on Pirates history over the last 20 years and wonder if they are going back to penny pinching.

Don't think this will really hurt them as some might expect. They can finally move the better glove and arm (Marte) to CF, and Austin Meadows is on the verge of making the call up. They can also put Josh Bell in the OF if needed, but I think they're trying to make him their everyday first baseman.

Its a cycle. Bring up young guys. Flourish. Resign them cheap compared to market. Lose them when they get too expensive. Repeat with young guys.

They have Marte and Polanco signed through 2021, so I would think they would try to use the money they will save with Cutch to try to buy out Cole's arbitration years, and maybe get a extra year or so on the deal.
