They didn't have Cabrera and Verlander was not yet an elite pitcher.

Nevermind, you're talking the 2003 team.

Who were they going to draft? An unsignable Appel?

it will be a challenge to keep Correra from growing into a 3B

They gave him 4.8 million when the slot was 7.2. It's what allowed them to sign Lance McCullers and Rio Ruiz, both of whom would have been 1st round picks if not for quesitons about signability.

Buxton wasn't a sure thing either.

Peter Gammons wikipedia;
Nice.

Peter also practices baseball elitism, believing low payroll teams, like the Astros, don't deserve a fan base.
Nice.

Yeah, they sucked for a decade. I don't think it takes a great farm system to develop top 10 picks.
Actually, there was a change in ownership in 2005. By loading up on farm system guys and turning the franchise around, by 2008, they're in the World Series.
Just sayin'.

I'm an Astros fan, and Gammons thinks he is frustrated. It's really hard to pull for a team that gives absolutely zero fricks about the product it puts on the field or its fans. Ticket prices go up year in and year out as do the prices of concessions and souvenirs. Who wants to take the time and money to drive into downtown Houston, pay for parking, tickets, and beer to watch a team you KNOW is going to lose 115 games or more? It's going to turn into Seattle or Pittsburgh where the home fans are outnumbered by fans of other teams.

Competitive or contending?
I give them 3 years. That's my expectations.
Springer, Deshields, and Singleton are all bright prospects.
Keep Altuve and Castro around (if Castro can stay healthy and you'll have a solid nucleus.
You go from there.

well if they dont care, then why should i care?
just have to watch out for apathy creep. for as successful the rays are now, the fanbase has become so apathetic that they still dont draw fans worth a damn
Tampa / St Pete is not a good baseball market to begin with and the stadium is in a terrible spot. The Astros problem is not that they don't care, it's that terrible decisions were made in the past 7-8 years that have lead to this spot. Trying to build up the minors is caring.

How could the Marlins be worse than this bunch?

Apparently you guys are just not paying attention to what's going on.
This whole "win now" thing just isn't going to work. .....That's not what the ownership is set out to do at this point.
I don't understand these fans that think they could put a winning team on the field in the next couple of years. Especially considering what the previous ownership left them.

New owner Jim Crane Monday announced a 5% rebate on full season-tickets and 27-game plans, along with a reduction of ticket prices for 5,000 seats in Minute Maid Park and even some beer prices.

Among the changes announced Monday, the Astros will permit fans to bring their own food and beverage into Minute Maid Park for the first time. According to Alyson Footer of mlb.com, the Astros also are expanding their $5 domestic beer special (14 ounces) to every permanent concession stand.

You guys arguing the point and complaining about ownership "not giving a frick" should go ahead and read this article. It's spot on.

I'd like to buy this man a beer. I can't discuss the Stros to anyone that actually understands the concepts they are implementing over there.

One thing that needs to be done, and soon, is this freaking Comcast deal. I don't care how bad they are, I want to be able to watch it.

It's frustrating as hell reading Astros articles and people commenting on them expecting them to win this year.
The whole attitude thinking the ownership just "doesn't give a frick" is so way off base, it's not even funny. The proof is in the farm system.
