Director of Athletics and Vice President Gene Smith announced Tuesday a $42 million project to improve C and B-deck at Ohio Stadium. However, the project will result in the removal of 2,600 seats, dropping its capacity from 104,944 to 102,854.

Smith said the athletic department plans on losing $1.8 million in revenue with the reduced seating, but figures to get some of that back with the new luxury boxes.

This is kind of crazy to me. The national trend is to expand seating to increase revenue, OSU is going to lose seats and almost $2 mill a year. They said this is part of an effort to make the stadium more suitable for other events.

disagree. the national trend has been much more about premium seating (suites) than sheer amounts of regular seats.

I just want them to start selling alcohol throughout the entire stadium. They'll get my $50 every home game.

LSU should do the same. Harder to tell if fans in the suites are departing at halftime.

What other events are they talking about? I know the state championships moved there from Canton/Massillon a few years ago, but those don't draw anything remotely close to capacity and luxury boxes aren't really a thing for those games. Are they gonna try and get a Browns and/or Bengals preseason game there every year or something?

ETA: After thinking about it, a Browns preseason game would draw a big number there. A Browns/Bengals regular season game if they could pull it off would draw a huge number, maybe close to a sellout.

Luxury/Club >>>>>>> raising capacity

Most programs should be doing this.

That was more my thought. Though the Browns are looking to improve their presence in Columbus

A different kind of football is set to come to Ohio Stadium this summer. An international exhibition match scheduled for July 27 at the ’Shoe between two of Europe’s premier clubs, Spain’s Real Madrid and French club Paris Saint-Germain, was officially announced Tuesday morning.

what? the national trend is literally the exact opposite. its to reduce normal seating and increase luxury seating. you make money off luxury seating, not the the other seats

Before you know it, every fan at the stadium will be watching the game through glass, just like tv.

Michigan, LSU, Tennessee, A&M, Miss St all have done major renovations to add seats in the last decade, no? It seems like a seating capacity arms race.

LSU's latest was mostly about adding suites and club seating to the south endzone. As a bonus, they moved some of the visitor seating to the top of the new addition allowing more seats to require a higher annual donation.

A&M's renovation was about closing in one of the endzones. If I am not mistaken, they had a larger capacity the year following the renovation than the 2nd year in which the suites were completed. So, if it was about more seats for them, they would've just kept the higher capacity.
