Two weeks ago... the Demons were playing for the Southland Conference Tournament Championship

last week... 1st year head coach Corey Gipson left to take the head coaching job at his alma mater Austin Peay

today... 8 of their players hit the portal... including the entire starting 5 from the SLC Tournament Final

Demarcus Sharp... the SLC Player & Newcomer of the Year
Ja'Monta Black... team's top outside shooter
Hansel Enmanuel... the 1-armed wonder

all among the exodus from Natchitoches

ETA: and Sharp is already being linked to Arkansas

That’s the new normal when a head coach departs a program.

hence why I mentioned it... it's obviously related

ETA: I expect to hear similar reports coming out of Corpus Christi about the team that beat NSU in the SLC Final soon as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Steve Lutz left to go to Western Kentucky

NSU was unlucky that the Austin Peay job opened up so quickly.

Gipson was building a tournament team in Natchitoches. Now they’re going to have to start over.

as bad as the portal has been for football, it's actually given depth to college basketball.

it's allowed p5 teams to retool and reload after firing a head coach.

There is no such thing as P5 in college basketball. Please don't spread that bullshite made up term ESPN created purely to pump the value of the conferences they had big deals with at the time.

This is the problem I have with the entire portal thing. An entire team leaving. New coach will have to build basically from scratch with fans pushing for instant success. 2-3 years later, calling for the coach to be fired. Rinse, wash, repeat.

Meh. This was a bullshite situation before the portal when coaches would abandon players yet the players were stuck. I have no issue with this usage of the portal.

I had a friend that was an AD at a DIII school the first two years of the portal. This is his angst about it.

Also the kids can just bail on a school without saying a word or having a counter or discussion with the coaches. Then entire teams can be depleted in a matter of minutes and the coach learns about it on the portal, not from a conversation.

NWSU's top 4 scorers Sharp, Black, Haney, and Hampton are all from Missouri. Perhaps they have a connection to Gipson when he coached at Missouri State and are leaving because he is no longer coaching at NW St.

Clarksville, TN or Natchitoches, LA. Really tough choice to be made there.

I am concern for LSU fans that just like to say we aren't playing this game anymore! Ed Orgeron was a perfect example.

This is why you gotta change your mental view of being a fan. Root for the jerseys and forget about the individual player. The player cares nothing about the school and are just using the school to play a game so they can put off (for the vast majority) what they know will be a very low level next 60 years of life. I long ago stopped considering the players in my fandom. There is always another player to take their place. The day is coming where most college athletics will cease to exist at most schools as the financial model isn’t worth it and admins are starting to see this.
