Patriots waived DT Dominique Easley.

Wow. This comes as a shock. Even though Easley has ended each of his first two seasons on injured reserve, he's flashed big-time ability in the 22 games he's been active since being the 29th pick in the 2014 draft. Coach Bill Belichick spent much of last summer talking up Easley. Knee problems ended his final season at Florida early and hampered him as a rookie. His 2015 season was cut short in December with a torn quad. There's potentially more to this story. Easley turns 24 later this month and should resurface quickly as long as there aren't any serious off-field issues that have yet to come to light.

The pats have played in what, like ~35 games since he's been drafted? That means he's missed somewhere around 7 games each year he's been on the team.

They probably want someone who is going to be able to contribute more than half a season.

It more than likely will cost them cap space to cut him. It has to be off the field issues or how seriously he took football.

Even if eh only played ~7 games, it isn't worth burning cap space cutting a guy who could be a top level DT

CBS Sports Insider Jason La Canfora reports the Patriots decision to release DT Dominique Easley was off-field related. It's not clear what Easley is dealing with off the field, but his release wasn't a "pure performance/football matter." There's rumors Easley's rehab from chronic knee issues also played a role in his release. Easley was highly effective when healthy last year, grading as a top-20 interior pass rusher across 275 snaps. The Patriots will lose $400K in dead money if he isn't claimed and signs with another team.

We need ro stop drafted dudes from Florida

I thought that the Patriots' draft system was infallible.

Another Urban Meyer top 1% of the 1% character recruit.

Though admittedly Easley seemed to have his head on relatively straight in college. Other than that whole Chucky obsession. That's a bit weird.

Hell seems like he even kept Ron Brace longer than Easley and he's 5x the player. Gotta be something else to the story.

It may not be an issue of off field problems or legal issues. It could be he hasn't done the work off the field or in rehab they wanted & expected. Rehab sucks & it sucks daily for months. Pats might have come to the conclusion he was never going to be a guy they could rely on to play on a consistent basis.

I doubt it. It's one thing if it saved cap space, but another if it costs money to get rid of him

Same situation as Josh Gordon, there's no real benefit to cutting him at this point.

The Patriots' draft system recognizes that even Belichick misses from time to time and that's why they try to stockpile draft picks. The number of picks is more important than when they pick.
