Mayweather: Nobody can brainwash me to think Robinson and Ali are better than me

In an interview ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, Mayweather said: 'No one can ever brainwash me to make me believe that Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali was better than me. No one could ever brainwash me and tell me that.
'But one thing I will do, I'm going to take my hat off to them and respect those guys because those are the guys that paved the way for me to be where I'm at today.'
When asked if he truly believed he was better than Ali, Mayweather recalled the heavyweight losing his world titles to Leon Spinks in 1978.
Leon Spinks only had seven fights,' he said. 'Never put a fighter in there with Floyd Mayweather with seven fights.'
Mayweather also criticised the 'rope-a-dope' tactics adopted by Ali against George Foreman in their Rumble in the Jungle.
'Are you going to tell me its cool to lay on the ropes and take punishment and let a man tire himself out from beating you,' he said. 'He's basically fatigued - you hit him with a few punches and he goes down and quits. You want to be glorified for that? Absolutely not, not me.'

Mayweather is one of the best defensive fighters in history and he would be a threat to almost anyone in any era. I also believe he's the best 130lb fighter in the sports history.
That said, he's nowhere near the overall fighter of Sugar Ray Robinson. It's a joke to even put them in the same breath.

I wouldn't expect any great fighter to say anything different.

Self-aggrandizing boxer? Unheard of!!!

Exactly. When people hate on Mayweather for his bravado I just laugh.

I know nothing about boxing and I dislike this dude, but why not consider him better than guys like that?

While I agree Ali is overrated he would destroy Mayweather, as would 50 other heavyweights

I understand what he's saying.
If you want to be the best at anything you can't have the mindset that anyone else is greater than you'll ever be, and all you can hope to do is get close. Once you do that, you limit yourself.
Well that's not some outlandish statement. There are unranked heavyweights today that would beat Mayweather. That's why they have weight classes. It doesn't speak to talent level. At some point the weight becomes too much to overcome no matter the skill level of fighters involved.

Mayweather >>>>> Ali
Muhammad Ali is one of the most overrated athletes in the history of any sport ever.

Not a chance, Ali has 70 lbs on him, that fight wouldn't even be sanctioned in the US

I'll agree with that

That is why GOAT discussions are 100% stupid. Especially in this instance. They will never fight each other, so how else would you expect to determine who was better? They will all go down as greats it doesn't really matter who was better.
MM will likely never lose a fight. But from the little I know about boxing, it doesn't seem like the competition was the same for the three boxers mentioned. If I had to guess I would say that Ali and Robinson probably faced better competition in their divisions that MM has in his. But I know little about boxing.

I am curious as to why you guys think Ali is overrated.
Posted on 4/21/15 at 6:39 pm to Kracka
well at least he knew better than to say he was better than tyson
Posted on 4/21/15 at 6:44 pm to Kracka
Because Smokin Joe was better. Ali tried to quit in Manila but Joe's corner called the fight.
Frazier>Ali
Frazier>Ali

Anyone that thinks Mayweather is the greatest of all time is a lunatic.

I don't see where anyone has said that.
But I'm not surprised that a champion thinks that of himself. You have to have some level of delusion to be an all-great, and he is that at least.
