I agree with him. Ali and Robinson are mere human beings. But over time, people mythologize these people to the point where they don't seem like mortals. They put them on pedestals.

People do it with every sport. And Mayweather is right... it's brainwashing.

Well said.

And since we know so much about Mayweather we're much more aware of his flaws. People are less inclined to think of an athlete as a great when he's done something deplorable in his personal life as Mayweather has.

I think if athletes of the past had the microscopes on their lives the way athletes do today we wouldn't think of them as fondly as we do.

All great points. People forget the flaws of the "legends". And the things they did well are seen as even greater as time goes by.

Robinson is a better pound for pound fighter than Floyd, mythical pedestal or not.

I feel like Floyd has never really fought someone who can beat him. A small portion of that is because he is really talented but the majority of it is the way he careful selects opponents to ensure he wins.

He fights up and comers with "records" or elite fighters who were either over the hill like De La Hoya or Pacquio, or makes someone balloon up to fight him. His best wins were against middle of the road guys like Zab Judah and Ricky Hatton. When Floyd got in his prime, his opponets got out of there's.

I also will go to my grave believing De La Hoya beat him.

How exactly? Name a fighter that has a better resume than beating Liston twice, Frazier twice, Norton twice, and Foreman.

Frazier>Ali

Jesus.

If Ali had fought Frazier in 1968, he would have won every round.

And didn't duck anyone. Ali fought Frazier three times. Sugar Ray fought LaMotta FIVE times.

He has also said, on multiple occasions, that he admires and has the utmost respect for boxing's historical greats, like Robinson and Ali. Mayweather acknowledges them as having laid the groundwork for the success he enjoys today.

And to add to that:

Kid Gavilan
Randy Turpin
Henry Armstrong
Gene Fullmer

And he was only two rounds from beating Joey Maxim for the light heavyweight title before having to quit on his stool from heat exhaustion.
