I didn't know Sabonis was even in, but if he is, I don't see how you can argue Manu being a lock.

Sabonis is arguably one of the best 4 best Centers to play the game since the beginning of the 80's

Would probably be a hall of farmer without playing in the NBA.

Good Lord. Arvydas is not in the company of Olajuwon, O'Neal, Ewing, and Robinson. That's 4 really easy right there

Sabonis in the NBA was a shell of himself. Go read what they said about him before. He was that good.

If the Hawks would've waited a year to draft him he would have been Atlanta property. The NBA voided the pick in 85 as he wasn't 21 yet

His Italian team won the Italian league and Euro titles.
Argentina won Olympic gold with him as star.
Argentina won World Championship with him as star.

Its a great career but not an NBA hall of fame career with just 14, 3, 3.

Havlicek also started out as 6th man, but later averaged 28, 9 and 7.5 and 27 8, 7 in his two best seasons and lots of 20 points a game seasons.

In his PRIME, he would have been right there with them. I shared this before:

quote:

“I am no longer a locomotive, only a small trolley,” Sabonis once told the Oregonian after he arrived in Portland.

quote:

Even before he came over to the NBA, Sabonis was slowed down by two ruptured Achilles and an assortment of foot, ankle, and knee injuries. The first occurred at the age of 22, in 1986, the same year Portland drafted Sabonis 24th overall

Bill Walton said this after watching a 19 Year Old Sabonis

quote:

“He probably had a quadruple-double at halftime, and his coach, Alexander Gomelsky, didn’t even start him in the second half,”

A fun story about Sabonis/Lithuania team in 1992

quote:

The legend of Sabonis grew after the game. The United States would play Croatia in the gold-medal game eight hours later, allowing for a time gap between the bronze game and the award ceremony. Sabonis and his teammates ventured back to the Olympic dormitory, where Sabonis challenged fellow Olympians in arm wrestling for shots. One by one, wrestlers and shot putters among them, Sabonis beat them. By the time of the award ceremony, three Lithuanians did not make it to the podium. Sabonis was one of them. “I knew how they used to roll,” said Chris Mullin, part of the United States’ Dream Team. “I think they came out with their tie-dye on. They did what the Deadheads do. They got loosened up. Made use of their free time.”

George Karl after two lone coaching stints in Madrid

quote:

“When I came back, I was asked if I could do it all over and try again to bring a championship to Madrid, who would I try to get on my team?” Karl said. “Sabonis was my answer. The best player in Europe was Sabonis. The most difficult player to play against was Sabonis. I had actually told all the NBA scouts who had come over to Europe to see Toni Kukoc and Sabonis at that time the same thing. I told them Kukoc is good. He’s an NBA player, but the best guy if you want to win is Sabonis.”

Finally, after his X-Rays upon arriving in Portland in 1995

quote:

Whitsitt asked Portland’s team physician, Dr. Robert Cook, to take a look at Sabonis’ X-rays before he arrived. Cook asked Whitsitt if he was sure his new player could play. “He said that Arvydas could qualify for a handicapped parking spot based on the X-ray alone,” Whitsitt said.

Sabonis fresh off rehabbing an injury playing against a future NBA Great

quote:

Before the 1988 Olympics, Sabonis visited Portland for a medical procedure on his Achilles.2 After an 18-month layoff, he returned in time to dominate David Robinson in the semifinals.

How Sabonis found out about being drafted by the NBA

quote:

Sabonis found out about his selection from reading it in a magazine article, uncertain of what it would eventually mean but certain the NBA was not a current option because of the political climate in his home country.

Sabonis "dominating" David Robinson in that 88 Olympic game:

Sabonis - 13 points, 13 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal
Robinson - 19 points, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals

Manu is a lock, no doubt.

It helps that he has heavily influenced the international game. I put him and Dirk as the top 2 of this generation for international influence (from non-US players).

Easily in the HOF. Along with Kevin Mchale the GOAT sixth man. If he had his own team he's easily a 25-5-5 player

One of the things in that article referenced the "legend of Sabonis", and any time you have someone speaking in those terms, you can almost bet the story is going to be embellished.

Without having played in the NBA in his prime against the best competition, you can't possibly make any argument that he was the best center since 1980.

Video of the game. 1st half

Full 2nd half

Here is the 1986 WC stat line
Robinson 20 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks
Sabonis 16 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks

The USA wins that Olympic game if Bimbo Coles and Charles Smith are not picked over Macon or Gary Grant. Hersey Hawkins being hurt made that team have no outside shooter except Thunder Dan who was wasn't a shooter yet. Richmond was a slasher also.

ETA:

Sabonis had just come back from his first ruptured Achilles in 88 Olympics. Robinson had been on a submarine and recruiting station duty. This conversation is not about best 4 it would have been who was the 2nd best C since 80 if Sampson doesn't have knee and back injuries in 87.
