Well, he learned a lesson.
ETA: I mean, what the hell was he thinking. He had three options: lower your shoulder, slide, turn around. He chose the fourth option: stare up at the sky and run.

Just like most big hits in any sport, it was a confluence of circumstances. The base runner never expected the catcher to come flying up the line. The catcher knew he had to tag someone running at him at full speed. If the catcher pussy-foots in there and stops he gets run over.
If you are running down the line and someone gets in your way, you better (A) keep running hard through the collision or (b) try to avoid the collision. The baserunner was shocked at pulled up slightly at the last second. The catcher didn't

How many catchers go out and try to make a tag like THAT?
If you have the ball forward of a runner off the bag, run towards the runner with the ball. You'll either tag him, or he'll go back to his base.
How many successful rundown plays have you witnessed in little league?
Just sitting there with the ball waiting to apply a tag at home greatly increases the runner's chances of being safe.

I mean the catcher didn't lower his shoulder, or even try to run through him like he was making a tackle. My dad would have asked me if I was okay then laughed at me if I was the base runner for being stupid enough to run into the catcher like that.

WTF was that baserunner doing?
Must have been a botched hit and run play where the batter missed the sign.
I'm sure the catcher expected the runner to stop or try to go back to third... but nope, he just kept on coming.

Kid lucky he didn't eat the baseball. And the coach is a dumbass for sending the kid home while batter swinging away (if they didn't screw up the signals).

But I doubt the catcher meant for that to happen. You can see him go up to the runner at the end of the video.

4. Catcher had near full extension of his arms after the collision. Don't think that was necessary.
I don't like to say "what I would have done..." in retrospect, but if I was using this as a teaching moment, I would tell the catcher to a) wait for the runner at the plate and make the tag, b) if the runner stops and retreats, then run towards him until it makes sense to throw to the third baseman, c) run partially up the line but not in the baseline and tag the runner out as he runs past you.
In scenario c, the runner would be too far away to slide and would be an easy minimal-contact play. From what I remember during my one year of umping Little League baseball about 10 years ago, the runners are not allowed to instigate collisions so there is no reason for the catcher to do the same in order to "protect the ball". I could be wrong though, and I can't seem to find a free copy of the LL rulebook online to verify one way or the other.

Good grief! The catcher made the correct play and I've got no problem with the way the tag was executed. If he stands at the plate flat-footed the catcher is going to get laid out. If he moves up the line but doesn't extend the tag, there is a chance the runner does a spin move or slides before the catcher can react. Blame the coach that thought it was a good idea to send the runner. It's sports ... shite happens!

Because catchers don't have gloves, they have a mitt and that ball when he made the tag was in his right hand. He didn't tag him high, he put it right on his chest. He was probably surprised that the runner kept coming.
