The batter was also somewhere in la la land not paying attention to the play. What was the catcher supposed to do? Let the runner use the batter as a screen and score? No. He flipped the script and sealed the gap. None shall pass. Play ball!

He should not have run into an obvious tag.

I'll never understand little league players who seem to do all they can to run into players with the ball, who are ten feet or more from them.

Seen it happen dozens of times as a little league coach over the years.

Just tag him and move on with the game without drilling the kid.

Soccer is way more physical than baseball. I'm not bashing baseball, just highlighting your ignorance.

What would be the proper protocol for the catcher?

Kid is running at him full speed and he is probably protecting himself as much as the ball or plate.

And for sliding up the basepath, shouldn't the catcher go up in case the runner holds up and heads back to third?

Catcher probably wasn't expecting the runner to be such a retard and continue running right into him.

Maybe. Runner definitely did himself no favors being an idiot, but the catcher could have easily applied a tag without the body check. There are lessons here for both players to learn.

Nah. You have to a savage a-hole or else you're not a man.

I'm not going to resort to name calling a kid, but if the catcher couldn't just stand there and make a tag on a kid that is barely even running (I mean come on, the baserunner wasn't even trying), then he shouldn't be playing catcher.

No reason to lay the wood like that. I'm all for being tough, but that's over doing it.

Ooh sounds like somebody played soccer

Jokes about soccer being a sport full of pussies are only not funny to pussies who played soccer instead of a real man's sport.

Catcher should play on the OL with that kind of punch.

I'm obviously joking. I too had friends who played soccer and also were good at plenty of other sports.

Without backup at the plate, the catcher shouldn't range too far outside his area. The plate and the ball are always his first responsibilities.

I wouldn't tell my catcher to go that far up the line to tag unless the runner began running to third, which would begin a standard rundown procedure.

In my opinion, in this situation, the catcher should put his free hand on the ball, in the glove, advance up the line a few feet, set in position and tag, with the runner coming to him. I wouldn't want him chasing after him up the line to apply the tag in a way that exposes the ball. No chasing back to third or throwing back to third without backup in place.

Was that poor soccer-player's head stuck in that baseball helmet that went flying?
