this is what the principal of a St Mary parish school wrote on another forum:
He had a vote on the proposals discussed in this thread. Now in his defense, he is a very nice man, that attends every home game his school plays. He is also a very vocal type of person, so you can see what some of the perception about basketball reffs are amongst the principals.
If this guy (who clearly gives a crap about his school's teams and cares enough about the issue to post on a Louisiana high school sports forum) can be this misinformed about what it takes (and what you get in return) to be an LHSAA basketball official, what do you think the rest of the principals across the state think?
For the record, his schools uses Lafayette Association for their home games.

Maybe we can give all the coaches a raise instead.
One official over the course of a basketball season earnes almost twice as much as a head coach. They don't have to practice, watch film, wash uniforms, etc., they just go to a couple of clinics and show up to a game and call. Until they are made to show up every weekend and critique the games they called (yes, have each game videoed) so they can learn just as the kids and coaches do, I will never vote again to give them a raise. They make $100 a night for about 3 to 4 hrs of work. What job do you know that pays $25 per hr. I'm sick and tired of hearing how hard it is, I know it is hard, so get your butts in position by hustling up and down the floor, quit having rabbit ears to everything that is said and call the game the way it is supposed to be called...AND THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT!

you agree with him? You think an official makes more over a basketball season than a salaried teacher with an additional coaching stipend?

That's bullshite!
Yes, I agree that the hourly pay is pretty nice, but you take a lot of harassment. What other job do you have that you know when you walk in, at the end of the day probably half of the people involved will be convinced that you suck at your job.

Salaried teacher, no. Coaching stipend, yes.
The principal did not meniton a pay raise for teaching, he mentioned a pay raise for coaching.

Coaching high school sports. And that's just counting you're on team's parents. Why stop at high school, ever read any in-game thread on the Rant?

He has the power to increase the coaching stipend
But I find it funny that you separate the teacher salary from the coaching stipend when the salary is based on the job description of being a teacher and a coach
If a teacher/coach is no longer a coach their salary will be less and they will lose the stipend

I don't know what kind of deals some private schools make, but a public school teacher/coach get's paid the same teaching amount as every other teacher of the same degree and experience in that district. The coaching stipend is paid on top of that, and it isn't very much at all. If the coach resigns from their coaching position, they will still make the same teaching salary as they previously made. Also, with all of the teacher accountability of the last 10 years, principals have made it very clear to coaches that they are held to the same standards as the other faculty.

Teacher pay is irrelevant. That is another issue. The simple fact, and the point of this thread, is that very vew people are willing to meet officiating requirements for $31/game. It just isn't worth most people's time. If the principals don't realize that and act accordingly, shame on them.

What I found amusing was the comment from the guy from Zachary (I forget if the news said he was a coach or a principal). He stated how he understood the concern but "they picked the wrong time of the year to do this".....Yeh, so a work stoppage by officials in the off season would have been a more effective plan?

Given the current pay, the schools need officials more than the officials need this specific work. When there's such an asymbiotic relationship, it stops working at some point.

FTR, I chose not to officiate in BR after I saw the amount and the requirements for new officials working nearly every night.
Volleyball paid more for my time and scheduling was much easier.

Wes Watts, is a great guy and is not biased to one side. His point was the middle of the district was a tough time for the teams to absorb the stoppage rather then in non-district... i.e. beginning of next year.

If i was a college kid i would do volleyball and fastpitch softball
They are by far the easiest physically to do and require the least amount of time

I can easily understand that, even with my simple "official" way of thinking. However, do you really think that if the officials agree to put off the work stoppage until the beginning of next season, the principals won't get a back up plan in place?

You are exactly right and i.e. why it is just kind of a sucky situation where both parties look bad
