So the other day I was looking at past NBA drafts and seemingly every draft contains highly unlikely "twists of fate" that lands a huge player with a team that wouldn't normally have gotten him. Or a future stud gets traded for peanuts before ever even making it to the practice facility of the team that drafted him.

The 2008 Draft is a great example of this.

The Seattle Supersonics finished the previous season with the 2nd worst record in the league and a roughly 56% chance to get a top 3 pick. Chicago, with just a 1.7% chance of getting the 1st pick, won the lottery. Last place Heat got the 2nd pick and 3rd to last Minny got the 3rd pick. The Thunder ended up with the 4th pick. That 4th pick was Russell Westbrook, an All NBA player with MVP potential. If they picked 2nd or 3rd do they take Mayo or Beasley instead? Maybe an OKC fan can shed some light on where Westbrook fell on their big board.

Minny took OJ Mayo third, but then traded him in a package to Memphis for a package with their 5th overall pick, Kevin Love, that night. Think of what Memphis could have done offensively with a Gasol, Love front court.

The Spurs took Goran Dragic with the 45th pick, but then traded him that night to Phoenix for their 48th pick and cash. The 48th pick was Malik Hairston, who didn't make it past training camp. Just think what the Spurs would be like with a guard rotation of Parker, Ginobli, and Dragic the past few years.

Anyone have other examples of future studs getting dealt on draft night for virtually nothing? Any unlikely lotto outcomes that ended up being a HUGE win for the team that "got screwed" in the lottery?

ETA: Not talking about guys who just got passed over ie Oden over Durant or Bowie over Jordan (lol Portland).

But wasn't there sort of an Eli Manning situation where Kobe was always going to go to the Lakers no matter who took him?

Minnesota in 2009 drafted like 4 PG's...passed over Curry.

Took Jonny Flynn #5 overall. The other PG's they drafted & traded included Ty Lawson IIRC & another pg who ended up making it in the league.

Took Rubio as well stashed overseas for 2 years off top of my head.

Dumb. Must suck being a wolves fan.
Took Derrick Willuams #2 overall a year or 2 later. Bust.

How about the Denver Nuggets drafting Nikoloz Tskitivislilsometing with the 5th pick, when no one in the organization had ever even seen him play in person.

He sucked. A lot.

I know this isn't about busts per se, but the notion that people hired to be in the front office of a professional sports operation could be that lazy and careless is mind boggling.

Seriously...Minnesota in 2009 had their choice of any point guard, they took Rubio (who was stashed) and Flynn (sucks).

Passed on: Curry, Jennings, Holiday, Lawson, Teague, Maynor, and Douglas.

Then took Wesley Johnson > Cousins in 2010

To be fair, Cleveland was pretty horrid too. All those top 4 picks and "lucky" 1st overalls and they couldn't do much outside of Kyrie.

That was actually a draft day trade. Even worse.

What if the rockets traded Sampson for Chicago's 3rd pick (MJ)?

I still think this is an interesting one. People always talk about the OKC model of rebuilding though the draft but how much of that was luck? If they had the 1st pick would they have taken Oden?

1985 Mavs drafted Detlef Schrempf over Karl Malone (making him cry). Obvious domino effect with Stockton pairing.

Why Mavs did this? Who knows...they had Mark Aguirre at SF, Blackmam at SG, Derek Harper at PG. Sam Perkins drafted over Barkley in 1984 (stretch 4)

With Malone at PF, wouldn't of drafted Tarpley in 1987 (beast) who was Kemp before Kemp & coke'd out of the league by 1990's.

Traded Schrempf for fricking Herb Williiams str8 up....Schremof went on to be 6th man of year & pivotal role on Sonics & Pacers contenders. Herb retired a year or two later.

Mavs flirted with worst record all time cuz these dominos in 1992 & wouldn't of had a high pick likely in 1998 to acquire Dirk, so 2006 & 2011 finals would be different

Nowitzki AND cash for Tractor Traylor

Westbrook at 4 was a surprise, a lot of experts had Jerryd Bayless rated higher.

The Magic wasting the #11 pick on Fran Vasquez who never even came over from Europe was dumb as hell.

Westbrook was all over the place but a lot of analysts had him in the top 5. IIRC (one of the thunder fo guys spoke about their draft) they liked Westbrook over oj mayo and decided between him and Brook Lopez.
