The Baez send down is interesting. I wonder how much bearing Addison Russell has on Baez's place on this team.

The only part i liked about that idea is that joe actaully (not in that broadcast) but previously, so that's why they were talking about it, indicated it would then allow him even more positional flexibility because he could get really creative with wood's usage including pitching and playing a position (not pitcher) in the same half inning. Because while wood can crank a home run and is a good hitting pitcher, he still sucks by comparison to a true positional player.

I've wondered why that doesn't happen more often. IF you have a righty reliever dealing, but want to bring in a lefty to face one guy, you can always sub the lefty in for an OF and move the righty out there for an AB, then back to the mound and a reserve OF comes in for the lefty. These guys, for the most part, have to be competent enough to handle the OF for an AB, and the way they scout these guys they know where any hitter is more/less likely to hit the ball, and can pitch to that tendency.

I guess they don't want to risk the pitcher out in the field getting embarrassed and making the manager look bad?

I've also wondered that with the Micah Owings type Relievers.

You could get real creative with double switches if you let the pitcher play an out or two in RF.

That's my best guess, because you're right. It's not like they can't shag fly balls.

I still think they cubs want to trade baez. but it's hard to showcase him at AAA. So i really don't know. I think russel makes it up by august this year so maybe the idea is get baez sorted, bring him up, see if there is value out there for him, if there is, trade him and replace him with russel.

It's the smart move. Why sacrifice a year of a player's prime for 2 weeks in the bigs?

It used to happen more in the 70s and 80s. I saw some of it last year, moreso than previous years. I think it's going to start making a comeback

Sweet Lou did that in a game I was watching a few years back...I want to say the pitcher he put in the outfield for an AB was Sean Marshall.

That's a great idea actually. I can't believe I've never thought of that.

Quotes from presser:

Maddon told Baez he might be the "most accomplished" 22 year-old he's been on the field with re other aspects of game besides hitting

quote:

The best part of all this was Maddon re Addison Russell. Said he had nothing to tell him to improve on: "Just keep doing what you're doing"

Down 2-1 in the 5th, your pitcher (not your ace) is throwing well, but his spot (8th) is due up with 2 runners in scoring position. Seems like you would have to pull him out.

You think they'd pitch to the 8th hitter with first open and the pitcher due up 9th?

I wouldn't doubt it, although Soriano made some good strides late in his career with his defense.

Like I said, it was a broad example.

Assume the bases were loaded if you want.

See ya around April 20 Kris

La Stella prolly gonna start off at 3rd

Olt will probably get most of the playing time at 3B to give him time to see if his new approach at the plate will pay off, especially with the Spring he is having.
