I love Kris Bryant more than anyone. And he's definitely the twinkle in my eye. But I'd be lying if I didn't say I have the strangest gut feeling that this year's Cubs MVP could be Jorge Soler.

You're not alone in that. In fact i think you can drop the "could" and put "will be" and be safe.

at this point it's old hat but here is grantland's take on the issue in their NL Central Preview

quote:

Off-Field Story Line: What else but Bryant’s delayed debut? There’s no aspect of the decision that hasn’t been dissected and turned into a take. There’s the numbers-based “back away from the ledge” argument: If the projections are right to peg Bryant as a 4.5-win player over 600 plate appearances, the difference between him and Olt3 — between any prospect and Olt, really, but let’s stick with one budding superstar at a time — over the 12 games the Cubs have to keep Bryant in the minors to delay his free agency until after his age-29 season is about 0.3 WAR. The odds of that difference swinging even a single game from a win to a loss, and of that loss being the one to keep the Cubs out of the playoffs, are remote.4 One can easily see why the Cubs would be willing to take that risk in exchange for an extra year of prime Bryant, especially since Scott Boras clients are unlikely to sign extensions.

My question is how many months before he reaches "Bryce Harper" overrated status.

I think most would tell you he already has. Keeping in mind when referring to harper you're still talking about a 22 year old kid with a ridiculously high ceiling.

Oh I agree. He's younger than Bryant, too. Most people dislike Harper because he's confident, if not arrogant.

Ah, gotcha. Yea, maybe bryant, who seems pretty humble and says the right things can be an anti-harper as far as public opinion goes, but i think they're both going to be stars...harper probably more so than bryant.

It's hard to believe that some of the shine has disappeared from Harper's star, then you realize he's 22 and is younger than the best prospect in the game right now.

Unbelievable...I really hope Harper can put together an awesome year.

It hasn't for me at least...dude will be a perennial 5-6 WAR player.

Injuries and Mike Trout. He's had a lot of accolades for a guy who has yet to play 130+ games in a season so I don't feel too badly for him.

Mike Trout is simply amazing and he may just be the best athlete in all of sports up there with J. J. Watt.

Jumbo-tron is in place. Bryant down, Jumbo-tron up. Some baseball purist just offed himself.

Cubs may not win any more games this year than last (i expect they do) but it sure seems like everything is getting better.

Brian Schlitter, Zac Rosscup and Junior Lake sent to AAA.

Matt Szczur will probably make this team, something I am very much okay with.
