I understand it from the Cubs point of view and it is absolutely the best play they can make, but if I were Bryant it'd piss me off and I'd never sign another deal with the Cubs.

Being irrational and emotional are really good ways to handle a business deal.

MLBPA @MLB_PLAYERS
Today is a bad day for baseball. We all know that if @KrisBryant_23 were a combination of the greatest Players to play our great game,(1/3)

MLBPA @MLB_PLAYERS
and perhaps he will be before it's all said and done, the @Cubs still would have made the decision they made today. (2/3)

MLBPA @MLB_PLAYERS
This decision, and other similar decisions made by clubs will be addressed in litigation, bargaining or both. (End)

Good luck to the MLBPA since they agreed to this rule in the new CBA.

You say that but they're costing him money. It's their right to do so, but you can't argue that they aren't causing him to lose potential money.

He could always sign an extension and have those arbitration years bought out...

Now that'll be interesting. MLBPA brings a cause of action for a person who isn't in their union (yet) to get him on a roster so a member of their union gets bounced from a job.

Do they then also intend to say to everyone else they represent that star players are more important to them than fringe players?

He could but then why would the Cubs care when he'd be a free agent if they're just going to sign him to an extension.

The whole reason they're putting him in the minors is go get an extra year before he can be a free agent. If he started opening day he'd be eligible for free agency in 2020, but by forcing him down he won't be eligible til after the 2021 season.

ugh the cubs are fearful he won't sign an extension and that's why they sent him down for 9 games to retain an extra year. I'm saying he could sign one and get paid, but he likely won't. Which is why the cubs, a business, made a business decision.

I don't like this for a team flush with cash like the Cubs. It's very possible kris is ok withy this and that something only the Cubs and Kris know. But I surely wouldn't piss off the number 1 prospect in baseball when I was flush with cash. This isn't the Rays. They will likely lock him up into a long term in a few years anyway.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read the MLBPA's comments. They negotiate the CBA on the behalf of current MLB players, not minor leaguers. So of course their negotiations aren't for the benefit of minor leaguers. But then they have a situation like this come up and try to act all put out by it.

MLBPA is one of the strongest unions in the country, and they have a whole cache of future members that they completely ignore during negotiations.

funny comment from Jason Hammel about Bryant being sent down

quote:

“I told him he needs to have a better spring next time,”

No one in the cubs clubhouse seems to be expressing any displeasure with the move, and all of them basically said they understand it's a business and he'll be back very soon.

Didn't Manieri do this at LSU when they won their NC? I swear I remember hearing about the double lead off move.
