Might as well have traded Brian McCann too. He's going to be unhappy as hell now that his best friend left the team.

I hate this trade as a Braves fan, but I was a big Francoeur fan.

You like a guy who hit .239 last season and .250 this season?

don't really know what to think

Church has never been happy playing in NY, he had that concussion last year and some rumors were floating around that he was dogging it trying to force a trade

Francouer is a disaster at the plate, the Mets are in need of power bats but Francouer strikes out so much.

I have to assume that something went down behind the scenes with Church and Manuel for them to trade within the division like this

like smartass said, maybe a change of scenery will help both players?

Yes they optioned him to triple-a to make room for some pen depth for final three games against the Rockies, he won't miss a scheduled start though LINK

Javier Vazquez was scratched from his start on Sunday from soreness in his leg of something. He will be ready to go after the allstar break. Medlen is starting on Sunday in Vazquez's place. Hanson is still on the team for the most part.

Don't forget Francouer was a home town boy that never got booed in Atlanta, he publicly cried when he was sent down to the minors last season to work some things out, and I think I remember reading where he was statistically the worst everyday player in the majors last year.

It'll be very interesting to see his transition/progression in NY

He was the last to start and he has options left so yeah a very good move to get them through the break

what are you laughing at?

anyway Mets perspective:
quote:

Omar Minaya said the Mets will receive ‘cash considerations’ in the deal from the Braves with Francoeur.
Minaya described Francoeur as a Gold Glove right fielder, who, as he put it, ‘some consider to be the best defensive right-fielder in baseball,’ and a guy who has a very good arm.
He said talks with the Braves started yesterday afternoon, and he followed up with GM Frank Wren this morning.
Minaya credited Assistant GM John Ricco with initially suggesting the team look in to acquiring Francoeur.
“This had nothing to do with not liking Ryan Church, but, one thing we like about Francoeur is the amount of games he plays,” Minaya explained, pointing out that he’s played over 152 games each of the last three seasons.
“We’ve got to keep on trying to do these type of things,” Minaya said. “We are working, it’s not that we’re not, there a couple of things we are talking to other clubs about, they may be big, they may be minor, but we’ve got to continue to try to do things to shake it up a little bit, and not just be complacent.”

mathew cerrone of metsblog.com's take:
quote:

i believe this may be part of a larger plan to essentially re-create the team to be Citi Field Specific, i.e., the best defense possible, speed, some power, more speed and lots of pitching… i hope this is the case… one step at a time, i guess…

Francouer is plus defensively but he isn't THAT good

Church's perspective:
quote:

Ryan Church told reporters, before leaving the clubhouse, that he looks forward to getting a new start with a new team.
He said he has no problem with how the team handled his injuries last season, though he admitted things probably could have been handled differently.
“I’ll always love New York,” he said. “I just want to thank all the fans, and it’s been great playing for this organization.”

it is no secret that mets have a horrendous training/medical staff and I know Church was pissed about the way they pressured him to return to the lineup last season

quote:

Francoeur had been hitting .250 with a .280 OBP, five HR and 35 RBI in 304 at bats for Atlanta this season.
He is under contract and eligible for arbitration through 2011, after which he can become a free agent.

Damn I just don't agree that Francoeur is a better RFer than Church but then again my knowledge of Church is very limited. Whats your opinion from a defensive perspective?

yeah sensitive guys don't tend to "thrive" in NYC

plus the Mets have a very cold clubhouse right now, there is some scuttlebutt about the clubhouse being divided. Manuel guys vs Non-Manuel guys and Church was definitely a Non-Manuel guy.
