Super Mario is solidly #2 and he's miles behind Gretzky.

I do not think Super Mario is 2, he is in top 6-7.

You can argue Howe, LaFluer, Mario, Richard, Lemieux.

Neither are sprinters, and neither are as impressive as what Bolt has done.

Oerter won against unimpressive competition and his WR's are laughable on the all-time list.
Same with Dayley. Ashton Eaton is kicking his arse by over 400 points in the Decathlon.

Usain Bolt is in the most difficult events to succeed in at a consistent basis, and is succeeding against proven cheaters.
Bolt is the only proven GOAT.

Wasn't Jesse Owens better all around at more events in track and field? Also, how would technology and equipment affect this argument? It seems like a time is a pretty objective measure of something, but is it really?

The Decathlon is not as impressive as the 100/200 double? Add 8 more events into Bolt's entries and then tell me it isn't impressive or as impressive.

The hell are you talking about?

So in 5 years when Bolt's WR you will make a thread saying he was not the GOAT?

I'd say any event that is very easily measurable like this would have to have a GOAT since they all have world record holders.

He was, but his feats don't match that of Bolt.
Taking time and technology into consideration, I look at how long it takes for a WR to be broken.

Jesse Owens:
100m - 5 years
Long Jump - 25 years (but 11th all-time)
200m - Can't find data

Bolt is WR holder in the 100m & 200m, holding the records for 6 years each, and many more to come.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that bolt is on PEDs. That cat at Baylor is the fastest legit sprinter in the world.

Actually, I tend to prefer when he tries to insist that Fleury is an elite goalie. Because making fun of the Flower never gets old. He's the second coming of Chris Osgood... only with two less Cups. (I rather like Osgood, though I think even he would admit that he was lucky to be on those loaded Red Wings teams).

But a GOAT playing right now? Phelps. And I think you can make a very good case for Messi, though I think he'll displace Cruyuff as the unofficial Greatest Player to Never Win the World Cup.

Its probably just my bias towards swimming, but Phelps is the reason the true definition of GOAT within a sport. He is the most dominant swimmer ever:

-4 time Olympian (only 1 other swimmer has done it 4 times, Phelps could make it 5 next year)
-39 Times he has set a WR (next swimmer did it 33 times)
-22 Olympic medals, 18 gold, 2 silver two bronze (next swimmer has 12 total with 8 gold)
-8 Olympic Gold medals in at one Olympics (next swimmer has 7)
-Currently owns 6 WRs out of the 16 different Olympic races (next 2 swimmers have 3)

Not from where I stand....Ruth was SOOOO much better than anyone else at the time they played its just silly.....

Rice?? Serious.... As much passing there is in the NFL nowdays I still doubt any of his records are broken... And the ULTIMATE teammate....Montana did not become GREAT until Rice came along....
