You ignored the rest of my post and a couple of others who said the same thing. There is no such thing as a HOF tier based on when you were elected. It has everything to do with the rest of the ballot. If there are 12 deserving players on a specific ballot, they won't all get elected and therefore some get pushed to the next year. If there is no one (like when Don Sutton was elected), and you are deserving, then you will probably get the votes.

John Smoltz was a first ballot guy.

When that happened I think it all but guaranteed Chipper will be.

Voters have looked very kindly upon the 90s Braves.

There is a voter who does't vote anyone on the first ballot because Dimaggio wasn't.

Also the only switch hitter in history with 400+ home runs and .300 average from both sides of the plate iirc

They don't have to elect anyone any given year...as far as I know.

(is that wrong?) Is there a mandate they HAVE to elect someone?

I thought everyone just voted yay or nay.

So...saying Chipper is in with a weak class is meaningless.

No, they don't have to elect anyone in any year.

They put in a ballot with a 'yay' vote for up to 10 eligible players. They do not have to vote for 10, but that's the max.

It's not meaningless, but what's more important is the holdover from last year and how many eligible players will be on the ballot.

On the 2018 first-time ballot, Chipper and Thome and sure-fire HOF guys, and I guess an argument could be made for Omar Vizquel and Andruw Jones.

Probably but the baseball writers are all self-absorbed pricks so maybe not.

I think Rose and Murray could argue that Chipper might be the fourth greatest switch hitter of all time... not that that's a bad thing either.

Murray just doesn't get his due from the average fan for as great a player as he was.

It's the baseball HOF.

Are you kidding me? Chipper Jones is an inner circle HOFer by every measure.

#1 All-Time in RBIs by a 3B
#2 All-Time in Runs Scored by a 3B
#3 All-Time in HRs by a 3B
#6 All-Time in Hits by a 3B
#6 All-Time in WAR for a 3B

Career 141 OPS+ (Higher OPS+ than any HOF 3B except Eddie Mathews and Mike Schmidt)

Led the league in various offensive categories (BA, OBP, OPS+, offensive WAR) throughout his career

Chipper will be a first ballot HOFer and it will likely be with over 90% of the votes.

Let me say this a little slower so you can understand...

Some of those names you listed originally were not first ballot because it was when the HOF was starting up. It has nothing to do with whether they were considered "first ballot" worthy. There are some idiot writers who think it means something, but it doesn't mean a damn thing and those dumbasses are starting to die off...hopefully.

Because of the nature of the voting, if a specific year is strong with candidates it will be hard for the borderline players to get in. If a specific year is weak, then players that are considered sure bets to get in will probably be able to easily get in on the first ballot.

Nah man, Joe DiMaggio didn't make it first ballot half a century ago so there's no way Chipper can.
