I would say yes.

I think the moniker, "2nd best switch hitter of all time," makes him first ballot material.

He absolutely should be but who knows. He's on the same level if not better than Brett and Boggs who were first ballot. If I were betting on it I would say he is but there are some pretty incredible players who were not.

Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Cy Young, Tris Speaker, Nap Lajoie, Mel Ott, Eddie Mathews, Roy Campanella and Harmon Killebrew all had to wait until at least their second ballot to be elected.

Chipper Jones ain't no Joe DiMaggio either.

84.6 career fWAR- 32th best among position players

7 year stretch of 6 fWAR- finished top 11 in the MVP voting every year with one 1st place finish

Great career and elite peak.

If I was gambling on it, I'd bet he doesn't get in on his first ballot.

I fricking hate the guy, but he probably deserves to get in on his first ballot.

He's easily the best of the first ballot guys up for 2018 so he shouldn't have a problem

On the other hand, John Smoltz got elected first ballot a few years ago.

That is meaningless and says more about the asinine way the Baseball Writers handle this process than whether a player is deserving to go into the Hall. If you are a Hall of Famer then you are a Hall of Famer and there are no points deducted for how many years it takes you to get in.

Additionally, Cy Young, Tris Speaker, Nap Lajoie, Connie Mack, etc all got in in their 2nd year because the inaugural class was Cobb, Johnson, Ruth, Wagner, and Mathewson.

There wasn't a waiting period back then. Dimaggio actually recieved some votes before he even retired. The backlog of players before the HOF was created meant that a number of guys had to wait a few years to be inducted. Then the 5 year rule was implemented to help clear the backlog.

Chipper is definitely getting in on his 1st ballot.

Musial, Ruth, Williams, Gehrig and Chipper Jones are the only players in Major League history to record at least 2,500 hits, 1,500 walks, 1,500 runs, 500 doubles, 450 home runs and 1,500 RBIs while hitting .300 with a .400 on-base percentage and .500 slugging percentage. He's also one of only two people ever to hit 300 from both sides of the plate. He's easily a 1st ballot guy

IT says everything about the baseball HOF.

So it's not meaningless.

This is not a debate about Chipper's qualifications.

It's a question, is he a 1st ballot - not by merit but by the baseball HOF.

They don't hand out 1st ballots like hub-caps.

It's usually, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Koufax, Mike Schmidt, Gywnn, Ripken, Ricky, Griffey, Ozzie.

I don't see the electors seeing Chipper Jones in that list.
