Here's the thing though, Bryant began coaching in one of the most transformative times in college football history. He won consistently in the one platoon system as well as the more modern two-platoon system. He had Kentucky competing for SEC titles (even had them in the national championship discussion one year) and going to bowl games on a consistent basis. In his final five years at Kentucky, they finished in the Top 20 five times, the Top 15 four times, and even managed to get into the Top 10 once. No other coach had done that at Kentucky, before or since.

And Bryant may not have had scholarship limitations....but neither did anyone else. Yeah...he won his biggest fame at a big-time program, but he also won consistently at places where a conference championship, let alone a winning season, is hard to come by.

I wouldn't consider Bear Bryant the greatest of all time, but he was certainly a better coach than Nick Saban.

Just out of curiosity, who would you put over Bear Bryant?

In 38 seasons, he achieved all of this:

323-85-17
6 national championships
15 conference championships
29 bowl appearances

Then either your hatred for Bama blinds you, or you know very little about CFB. Which is it?

I don't consider Bryant the best of all time but I can see why some would. It's subjective.

Just some candidates

Paterno-won titles and made Penn St a big time program
Bowden-what he did at FSU is phenomonal. Just imagine if he didn't blow so many national title opportunities. That actually knocks him down for me.
Tom Osborne-would Nebraska have been relevant if not for him? Also coached the best team I've ever seen in '95 Nebraska

I think Snyder is the best pure football coach right now. Saban is the best all around coach because of his complete control of a program and attention to detail. His career has been full of basically an all star team of assistants. That helps. The difference is that Saban couldn't do at KSU what Snyder has and is. Not with the same talent.

Knute Rockne should be up there too. He basically invented the Notre Dame juggernaut, and literally invented the forward pass.

Nebraska was a powerhouse when he took over as head coach.

I have him ranked around 16. He took a shite school and made a consistently good program out of them. But, c'mon man. The GOAT?

Boise was a powerhouse, relatively, when Peterson took over as coach.

The Boise thing was a team effort, IMO. You have to give some amount of credit each to Dirk Koetter, Dan Hawkins and Chris Peterson. Peterson more than the others (he was Hawkins' OC), but not all of it.

Petersen has taken it to a different level.

Hopefully he leaves for the NFL soon because Boise has made some terrible decisions lately and they are probable going to fall pretty soon
