I realize there was a similar discussion recently, but it's hard to not continually recognize how phenomenal the guy as been. He took one of, if not the worst program in collegiate sports and turned it into a consistent winner that perennially contends for bowl games that pre-Snyder the program never dreamed of reaching. He leaves for a few years and it goes back into the tank. He returns and rights the ship almost immediately.

If Snyder was ever scooped up by a traditional power that could consistently recruit elite talent would he have multiple national championships to his credit? Or is his success dependent on bringing a unique approach to a school that will more or less remain out of the limelight? Either way, Snyder's career is nothing short of genius.

Bear Bryant took one of the worst programs in the country at the time, won an NC within 4 years, won 8 out of 10 outright SEC titles in the 70s, and 6 NC's overall. So no.

The guy should be up there. It's like he has some magic power that turns Kstate from a laughing stock to a team you don't frick with.

On the other hand Bear Bryant = most overrated coach of alltime. Not saying he wasn't great, but honestly think Saban is better.

Bear Bryant had consistent access to talent, had essentially unlimited scholarships and coached during a period lacking the parity of modern football. He obviously did a legendary job at Bama, but I don't think even he could have topped what Snyder has done at KState. It's impossible to know and comparing eras is difficult, but Snyder has to be considered at least in the top 10 of all time coaches given KState's natural barriers to success.

I think Saban has to be at or near the top. The man is hated by everyone outside of Gumpland, but you cannot argue with his record the past 15 years in college football.

I'd probably agree. But that's not what you asked.

Saban > Bear

That's my opinion when considering the times and the difficulty in building a dynasty these days.

How can Saban be better than Bear when I keep hearing on the SECr that Les is better than Saban?

Snyder is a phenomenal coach. I'll never understand how his name isn't thrown around in the mix more. Imagine if how he'd do at a SEC like Georgia or Florida.

Snyder's a great, great coach but I've always felt that it's far more difficult to have a good program and get it over the hump to win championships than it is to take a bad program and make them decent. I mean Frank Beamer built Virginia Tech program up from nothing. Is he in the running to be the greatest CFB coach of all-time too?

Was Snyder allowed to sign 100 player a year to keep them from other teams?

The NCAA scholarship limit was at 95 scholarships when Bill Snyder took over at Kansas State in 1989 so the answer to your question is yes.

Virginia Tech was 10-1-1 the year before Beamer got there. Kansas State won 9 games in 6 years before Snyder got there.

Every coach at the time was allowed to do that, and Bear's success against his peers is still better than Snyder's against his.
