Yes, The Boat said it. I originally posted a bad link which is why you might not have been able to pull it up. Try it now if you want to see.

Ok, it's official. That is the dumbest sports related comment I have heard on this site.

If you find the "sports related" part of his comment that comical you could remove those two words and his statement would still be accurate imo.

That's not even close to true. But this quote might be. You must not venture to the political board often.

The only horse I used to see argued against him was Man O War. Native Dancer had a sterling record as well.

Which shows how impressive Sham actually was. Sham was the Mike Trout, losing an MVP to another Triple Crown winner. Miguel Cabrera.

and Secretariat plumb wore his arse out in the Belmont, think he faded to last or near it trying to keep up.

So the usual story (hope) is "The second best horse in the first two races will get him in the third at the longer distance."

nope

From Wikipedia:

quote:

Belmont Stakes

Under orders, Pincay was to keep Sham with Secretariat from the start. Sham was on the outside throughout, which cost an insignificant amount of endurance more than Secretariat on the rail. This strategy worked through the first turn and into the backstretch as Secretariat and Sham led the field and then pulled away by a half-dozen lengths with Sham taking a brief lead at several points. Halfway through the race, Secretariat increased his pace and pulled ahead rapidly as Sham began to tire and fell back. With Pincay easing back to protect the exhausted horse, Sham ultimately finished last as Secretariat pulled away to a win recorded at 31 lengths. The time of 2:24 flat remains a world record for 11/2 miles on a dirt track.

Your basic statement is correct, just clarifying why it was such a large margin of victory over Sham.

...and Citation (who also won the Triple Crown) and won 16 straight major stakes races (a record) -

Citation is also beloved not only because of his ability - but that he wasn't pampered and was raced so much and so often and still kept winning (45 races - 32 wins) compared to Secretariat (21 races - 16 wins)...back when you won your money through winning races and not Stud fees - Citation was the first horse to ever win over $1 million in racing for his career.

In the Blood-Horse magazine ranking of the Top 100 U.S. Thoroughbred champions of the 20th Century, Citation was ranked #3.

Unlike the two horses ranked ahead of him, Citation was not retired at the end of his three-year-old season; at that time, his record stood at 27 victories in 29 races with two close seconds. The two horses ranked ahead of him, Man 'O War and Secretariat, were both retired at three years old and with only 21 races each.

Citations record up to 3-year old also beats Secretariat and Man O' War.

Do race horses understand when they win or lose a race.

I don't know if it is understanding the "win" the way humans do, but I do think certain horses want to win. When that horse Cigar would run and another horse would come up by him, he would kick it into another gear.

One of my favorite sports moments.King da felt sorry for sham, great horse but having to go up against greatest race horse ever.

1988 Belmont was another favorite of mine Risen Star pulling away very similar to his daddy Big Red in 73

Sham was shot, the first mile killed him trying to keep pace, Pincay didn't have much to pull back on. Big Red was just in a different league that day.

I remember that summer well. I just finished the 7th grade and was living a "sandlot" summer. The season of Secretariat was a nationwide phenomenon.

He was something we will never see again, a super horse .

I think the only reason Man O'War beats Secretariat in those polls among "experts" of greatest horse ever is because some folks like playing "expert" and are arrogantly trying to show us they are hotty totty enough to know something we laymen are not privileged to know. I'm not impressed. To borrow the name of another horse as a pun, it's all quite a sham. Any unbiased observer who witnessed Secretariat in 1973 knows the real answer.
