Secretariat beat a grand total of 4 other horses at Belmont.

Color me unimpressed.

Your original point had some validity. Don't double down with stupidity.

He scared them all off, beat them before they started.

His offspring are collectively the clearest example of regressing to the mean in history, too. A few did alright, one won the Belmont by a lot, but out of 600 or so there weren't that many that really stood out. I think I read somewhere he sired some good dams though, maybe it skips generations. I don't know anything about it other than I would like to be a stud horse in my next life.

The time is impressive.

The 31 lengths against 4 horses isn't.

If he was running against a crowded 12 horse field does he run the same time?

Yes he does.... I just don't think how some of you don't realize just how special a horse he was.....

I realize you guys are just trolling, but yes, he and Sham had the fastest 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 times. He would have ran away from 12 as easily as 4-5.

Didn't you already prove in the thread last week you don't know much about horse racing?

i admit i know almost nothing about horses but from what i`ve read didn`t Secretariat run each quarter of the race faster than the previous quarter in both the Derby and Belmont? And how unusual is that to do?

Secretariat then went on to win the Belmont Stakes by the widest margin of victory in Belmont history... 31 lengths. His time in this race is still a record at 2:25

Let's get it right. His time was 2:24. No other horse in history has broken 2:25 on dirt.

Yep, his progeny with regard to colts and their racing results was very average. He was the sire of a number of noted broodmares though.

I've read that his grandchildren and great-grandchildren through those broodmares have had more success because supposedly the "x-factor" that he possessed (his huge, perfectly normal, heart) could only be passed genetically through his daughters. Whether that is truly the case, I'm not positive, but I know I've read that before.

So you're saying that if the field in the 1973 Belmont had been bigger, he would have ran slower?

Didn't seem to bother him in the Derby and the Preakness.

As I pointed out in the OP, in the 1-1/4 mile Derby, he accelerated through every 1/4 mile split. When he crossed the Derby finish line he was running faster than he did in any of the previous 1/4 mile splits. He would have been accelerating at the 1-1/4 mile post in the Belmont too while the other horses were tiring.

The only thing Turcotte may have done differently is instead of taking him immediately to the front, he could well have used the same strategy he did in the Derby and Preakness, to fall to the back and make his move entering the back stretch.

And, yeah, he would have passed every damn one of them.

Do race horses understand when they win or lose a race? Do race results make them try harder next time? Do they have any feelings?
