I read the whole link. It's based on an apocryphal story which in no way reflects the reality of why the word soccer was adopted. The word "soccer" came from the Oxford dialect. That much is historically accurate. I'm still not sure what he was wrong about. There is also no consensus on where the word football came from, though it was referenced since the 13th century referring to both games play on feet and games played with the feet.

EPL is probably my second favorite thing to watch right now, behind CFB. It's fun as hell.

CFB is definitely better. I like those tight tight capri pants they wear.

eta: Not those fat linemen though. Ewwwww.

Why do people still hate soccer?

Just a side story I absolutely love when people played offensive or defensive tackle's that played high school act like they are some freak of nature athletes and soccer players are pussies. Most people can't even kick a soccer ball right..

I skimmed it and stopped when they started talking about how soccer is more American because the players are freethinkers and also free to go wherever they want on the field. While football, on the otherhand, has rules that limits which players can go where. Therefore soccer is more American because freedom.

Writer apparently doesn't know soccer has an offsides rule.

Players can go offside all they want and play resumes as normal so long as a pass is not intended for that player. There is no law against a player simply being offside.

They need to shorten the field and get the offense going. More goals and shots on goals would improve American viewership.

If that's all it would take, why isn't futsal or indoor soccer more popular in America? Or anywhere for that matter?

Some are shorter and narrower than others. There is no standard size just a size range. A smaller field just means defense can pack it in tighter of that's their plan. It does nothing for offense. It would either lead to a slower, more methodical possession based attacking approach with few actual attempts on goal. Or a ping pong match where neither team can maintain possession. Either way its bad for attacking play.

There are around 3.5 goals on average in a match if I remember correctly. That's quite a bit.

Oh... another soccer v. america thread on the MSB

These are always fun to spectate and laugh at the idiotic comments from both sides of the argument.

"soccer's gay"
"football is unamerica"

Holy shite guys, it's ok to like football and soccer.

I'd say MOST soccer fans also like football. Or at the very least have nothing against it. I don't think I'd say the same for football fans.

But yea, it's old and tired.

I grew up with football, it's my favorite sport. I did gain an appreciation for soccer when living overseas though. I'm comfortable in either sphere, to be honest.
My two boys taught me the game of soccer. I've been hooked since they started playing and following here and abroad. Incredible sport. frick the haters.

I don't mind soccer, I like the World Cup. What I don't need is people telling me why I need to like soccer. It's a sport with great athletes, but so's figure skating, gymnastics, track & field, etc.... Should I like those sports too? (I can appreciate them, but not care about them). Live and let live. If people like the sport, they'll watch. There's no need to go all "America" all over our asses to make a case.

I don't at all. I do, however, hate the chip-on-the-shoulder complex surrounding so many soccer aficionados, such as with the dude here who was possessed to write such an asinine piece.

It really might be one of the worst articles I've ever read. Arguing a sport is more aligned with a mostly imaginary national attitude is retarded.
