Even more amazing for Ovi: he's doing it with Barry Trotz as a coach.

Yeah the predators and the rangers lost last night. Oh well.

Just realized the last time a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup was 1993. Holy shite! 1993 is when I graduated high school. It is also the last time a Canadian team won a World Series. The ford Taurus was the best selling car, Mario Lemeuix was still playing, Michael Jackson performed at half time in a Super Bowl featuring the Bills, Chris webber called an extra timeout. Wow that's a long time.

no doubt. great goal scorer indeed. I don't think anyone is doubting that

Ovi would have scored 50 goals in the strike shortened years

we cannot assume anything

Even more amazing is that Ovi is doing this in a dismal offensive era.

you had great goalies back in the day as well and they had bigger pads unlike todays goalies.

He is the best pure goal scorer in NHL history.

that is arguable and purely subjective.

definitely in great company though.

Great one- plenty cups 9 50 goal seasons
Bossy-4 cups 9 50 goal seasons
lafleur-plenty cups 6 50 goal seasons
lemieux-couple cups 6 50 goal seasons
Dionne-6 50 goal seasons
ovie- 6 50 goal seasons

Pens host that one franchise in the same State that hasn't won a Cup in 50 years tonight. Should be fun. On NBCSN in 20.

Pens are once again playing with just 5 defensemen and 12 forwards. Have been since Letang injury, against the cap so we can't call anyone up apparently. Something like that.

No Malkin tonight either, maintenance day, like WTF? No Malkin or Letang for a team struggling to score, SWEET.

After tonights game the Pens can use an emergency call up but he has to make less than 650K.

This is fun.

Sure. But he was on pace to score 50+ in the 48 game season and he DID score 50+ goals if we count his KHL time. Ovie has lost two seasons to labor unrest, making his 6 50+ goals more impressive. He lost prime chances outside his control (Bossy lost a chance to get more due to injury)

They did. But goal scoring is WAY down. This is a much lower scoring era. Goals per game are at 2.74, and have never been above 3.00 in Ovie's career. The NHL averaged over 3.0 goals/game every year from 1970 to 1996, save one (1995). It even cleared 4.00 in 1981. It was much easier to score goals prior to the Trap Era. It's not just goalies.

Ovie has 50 goals right now. The #2 goal scorer has 40. That's 25% more than the #2 guy. He's crushing the field.

Of course it's arguable. But Ovie actually has more "Adjusted Goals" which puts every player in the same goal scoring environment. Over the 1st 10 years of his career, Ovie has more Adjusted Goals than anyone, including Wayne f'n Gretzky. Let's stress this: Ovie has actually broken one of Gretzky's records.

quote:

Great one- plenty cups 9 50 goal seasons
Bossy-4 cups 9 50 goal seasons
lafleur-plenty cups 6 50 goal seasons
lemieux-couple cups 6 50 goal seasons
Dionne-6 50 goal seasons
ovie- 6 50 goal seasons

They all also played with boatloads of Hall of Famers. Gretzky took the ice and EVERY OTHER PLAYER on the ice is a Hall of Famer. Ovi has played with maybe one Hall of Famer (Backstrom). Two, if you count the 20 games he played with Federov.

And 1974.

I don't like the Flyers either, but they have won two Cups. They were the first non-Original Six team to win one.

It's still 45 years ago. And their fans talk as if they've won 5 since 2000 when in reality they're completely irrelevant.

Zac Rinaldo's first game since his 8 game suspension worthy hit on Letang.

Remember that shite? Then remember Letang's hit last week, jesus.

Rinaldo is lucky the Pens are shorthanded or someone would have already fricked his world up.

Pittsburgh has been better no doubt but Philly has been in a cup final more recently than the Pens have so saying they're completely irrelevant is a little strong

Not really, making a cup final isn't an accomplishment (especially a year after the Pens won the damn Cup), well maybe for the Flyers.

Pens have won the Division twice since then too and haven't missed the playoffs in 10 years now while the Flyers have missed the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years now.

They're pretty damn irrelevant.

Ya it's semantics but when I think irrelevance I think of Toronto or something....Philly hasn't been elite but I also wouldn't say irrelevant

Philly is atrocious away from home, they've won 8 out of 37 road games, including losing their last 9.....like night and day, they actually looked like a good team against the Hawks last week
