Better than the 2009 team.

Damn shame the defense fricked them out of the NFCCG

I guess back then we didn't realize what Tom Coughlin could do come playoff time.

86 Bears

I almost mentioned them, but they were so dysfunctional, they didn't deserve to repeat.

To this day, the defensive players argue it was different without Buddy Ryan (which I'm sure it was), but they still finished as the #1 defense in the league. Ditka completely mismanaged the QB situation while the defense essentially dragged the team to 14 wins.

A couple of my friends' dads in Chicago swear the defense tanked the 2nd half of the playoff game against the Redskins because they were sick of Ditka and the offense. Not sure I buy it, but those guys were so crazy and loyal to Buddy, anything is possible I suppose.

No disrespect to Vikes fans, but Minnesota might not have even been the best team that season: they finished 13th in total defense, 19th in pass defense and 11th in rush defense. That team squandered a 14 point lead in the NFC title game, Randle got injured, and couldn't even stop Chris Chandler in the final 2 minutes from tying the game with a TD. With a season-long defensive performance like that, not much surprise they didn't make the Super Bowl that season-they allowed 19 ppg against an EASY schedule, that's simply atrocious.

IIRC, they gave up a shitload of garbage time points because they had huge leads in just about every game. That MNF game at Green Bay comes to mind. They were up 37-10 before GB scored two late touchdowns. Same deal with the Thanksgiving game in Dallas.

But lets face it...Pittsburgh got its arse-whooped (for the 70's) by the Raiders. That #1 defense couldn't stop the Raiders.

WTF????

1972 = Steelers 13-7.
1974 = 16-10 Steelers
1975= 24-13 Steelers.
AND FINALLY in 1976 after the Raiders got A lucky call against NE, they beat A depleteted Steelers team in the AFC title game.

Read above.

I don't know why initial post is causing so much confusion.

It's that one AFC championship game.

24-7 for football's deadball era was an arse-whooping.

The year before Pittsburgh beat Raiders 16-10 in the AFC championship game.

Then in 1977 Denver beat the Raiders 20-17.

1972 Dolphins over the Steelers in the AFC Championship game 21-17.

Steelers were never in that game despite people thinking 24-7 today isn't that difficult a hill to climb. Teams didn't score in a minute or two, it wasn't basketball on grass.

They were a few Greg Williams ill-timed blitz calls away from playing the Giants in the Superdome for the NFC Championship game.

A giants team that we beat 49-24 earlier that season. God damn that season hurts to think about.

24-7 in the 1976 AFC Title game was like 21-0 (LSU-Bama)...one team wasn't really in it.

The score was 24-7 in the 3rd quarter, nobody scored in the 4th. Pittsburgh rushed for 72 yards and Bradshaw had a 44.5 QB rating with 0 Tds and 1 Int.

It was total domination.

I maintain that a Bills-49ers Super Bowl XXV would've been just the most incredible matchup: the K-Gun vs. Montana/Craig/Rice, 3-peat implications, the whole 9.

Montana was hurt.

Young would've started.

Leonard Marshall hit Montana so hard he had multiple injuries. Bruised sternum.. broken ribs.. and a broken hand.

69 Colts. They turned the ball over a lot in that game. Jets never stopped their offense. Colts kept turning it over.

Immaculate Reception was tainted. That was officials.

If you're not healthy, that's football and that's what you can control...you have a huge roster just like everyone else.

If the Steelers D was so great that year they would have competed. Raiders won that game on the ground against the #1 ranked D...Raiders were 15-1, Steelers were 11-5.
