Duke-UNLV 1991 vs. UK-Wisconsin 2015

These games were so similar. UNLV knocked out Duke in 1990 and was undefeated in that 1991 game. Which was better in your opinion?

Right now, still 1991 Duke-UNLV

Duke-UNLV. The Rebs would have waxed UK.

I still think Duke beating UNLV is/was the more shocking upset. Virtually no one thought Duke had a chance going into that rematch,, especially given the way UNLV dominated Duke the year before. Most people expected this one to be at least close.

UNLV crushed Duke by 30 points in the NCG in 1990. UNLV was 34-0 entering the Final Four in 1991. 5 NBA picks from UNLV in 1991.
The reference is solid, but Duke beating UNLV in '91 was a much bigger upset IMO than UW winning tonight.

Both were semifinal games too. I agree UNLV would've smoked them.

There was just so much more at stake in that game.
UNLV had already proved they were legit and were going to go back to back and they had waxed Duke's arse in the title game the year before.

Entirely opposite in terms of relative experience.
UNLV was the veteran team with multiple NBA draft picks. One of Duke's best players (Grant Hill) was a freshman.
In this case, the undefeated team was freshman-and-sophomore-laden, while the underdog was the more veteran team.

This one because UK took the lead after being down and Wisconsin went on a run.
Plus Duke was actually as good as UNLV if not better.
The Big West never tested the Rebels.

Didn't they..uh...win the title the year before?

No they didn't
You forget their Center was gone.
They moved Ackles in for Butler.
They were much better with Butler than Ackles or Curry at C.
They also played a tougher schedule in 89/90
They had played Temple, Arkansas, and Loyola Marymount In Vegas. I believe they played KU and OU on the road

quote:I don't know about this. They had 4 NBA starters returning from a '90 team that was 29-5 before the NCAAT and went on to finish 35-5 including beating a very talented GT team in FF and crushing Duke in NCG.

They had the same 4 NBA talent and added another NBA 1st rounder. UNLV was 30-0, Duke was 26-7 entering the NCAAT. Duke was loaded though but young. Grant Hill was a FR. UNLV was on a 45-game win streak.
Duke winning was a HUGE upset. One of the biggest in sports along side NY Giants beating 18-0 NE Pats in Superbowl.

Georgia Tech should've never been in the FF if you remember.
They hit a 3 that came way after the clock and cost Michigan State the game.
But that Lethal Weapon 3 team did have some shooters (Anderson, Scott, and Oliver).
Again I'm saying tonight's game was a better game. But the 34-1 team IMO wasn't as good as the previous years team. As I stated the NC team was deeper and played a tougher schedule. Both were great teams though. The 91 team gets the recognition for being unbeaten.
They should have never been I. The NCAAT though the NCAA caved in to Tark due to a threatened lawsuit. The Fixer pic was run the summer before and they got hammered with probation the next month (May 91)

Hell i had wisky winning this one. Duke over unlv by a mile

Let's put 1990 aside. UNLV faced who they faced - although GT was ultra talented lol - and smoked Duke in the Finals. 30 point margin of victory is the largest in NCAAT NCG history.
That said, UNLV losing to Duke was a much bigger upset than UK losing tonight. That's IMO.
Whether the 91 UNLV team was as good as the 90 UNLV team, okay I could go either way on this.
I will say that the main thing I will remember from this game is the horrible officiating. I just don't think this was the upset that Duke beating UNLV in '91 was.

I thought the OP asked which was a better game not bigger upset?
I think this was a better game. 91 was bigger upset though.

What were the spreads of each game?

But I don't think this was a great game at all. If anything it was a frustrating game with the officiating. The 91 UNLV-Duke game had 10+ lead changes in the 2nd half and Duke won by 2. UNLV had the ball and took a 3-pointer to end regulation that would have won it. UW won by 7 today.
