Does anybody find it strange how Urban Meyer has won such few coaching awards?

Meyer hasn't won a single COY award since 2004. He's never been voted AP Coach of the Year or Walter Camp Coach of the Year or Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year or Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year or AFCA Coach of the Year. He also never won SEC Coach of the Year when he was at Florida and has yet to win Big 10 Coach of the Year while he's been at Ohio State. I don't know if Meyer has issues getting along with the media but it's really unusual how he never wins any coaching awards despite being widely recognized as one of the two best coaches in CFB today.

Those awards tend to skew to people who have outlier seasons with shitty programs. So, Houston Nutt and Steve Spurrier got awards and Saban got one in 08 when you might expect Urbs would get it.

He's so good, it's expected.

Kirk Ferentz has the B1G Coach of the Year award locked up on an almost yearly basis (not that far from the truth). The fact is that the expectation is that Meyer will do what he does year in and year out.

I think he's about trophies anyway and doesn't care about personal awards.

Well Urban was named Sports Illustrated's and Sporting News'coach of the decade after the 2009 season.

That's true but the lack of conference COY awards is puzzling. Coaches are often awarded for just having a great team. Pete Carroll won Pac-10 COY 3x while Chip Kelly and David Shaw has each won the conference COY twice. In the SEC, Spurrier won SEC COY 3x at Florida while Saban's won it twice at Alabama. And then you go over to the Big 12, Bob Stoops has won Big 12 COY 5x and Mack Brown's won it twice.

It's the nature of these awards.

Despite 4 titles and 7 Finals trips...Pat Riley won it once in 10 years with the Lakers.

But Don Nelson won it 3 times during that span and Doug Moe and Mike Fratello won it also.

Pete Carroll never won AP coach of the year...or the Sporting News coach of the year (first awarded in 1963) or the Bear Bryant award...even during that 2002-2008 run.

Ferentz, Saban, Tuberville, Paterno, Mangino, Grobe won it.

Media plays favorites and looks for underdogs or redemption.

If you have the best talent, you can't be the best coach.

it is somewhat crazy b/c he's inching up the GOAT rankings every year

i mean saban may be the GOAT and is at worst like 3rd all time, but man, corch is probably top 5-6

Once you are considered a great coach, you tend to stop winning coaching awards.

Speaking specifically to the B1G, what is even more ridiculous is that no Ohio State coach has won B1G Coach of the Year since Earl Bruce won it in 1979......1979!!! That's right, no John Cooper, no Jim Tressel or Urban Meyer. Yet bums like Ron Zook, Ron Turner, John L Smith and Kirk Ferentz (4 times) have won it. The B1G coach of the year award is an absolute joke.

Sometimes, timing just jinxes you all the way through your career.

Staubach never won an MVP, even after retiring with the snd highest passer rating in NFL history (at the time), highest season passer rating 4 times, winning two Super Bowls (including an MP in one, though probably not deserved), and generally being Captain America in a football uniform.

Plenty of other guys out there with similar stories. You can be a subjective "second best" 10 times in a row and still not be a "winner".

He's already one of the GOAT coaches and he's just 50.

It might have be because, with the exception of what he did at Utah, Meyer has never had to build a program. Ron Zook left him with a roster of four and five star at Florida. Jim Tressel left him with an even better situation at Ohio State.

It's really difficult to be named Coach of the Year when you really didn't have to coach a team up to win a lot of games.

To be fair though, Ohio State came off their worst season ever(if I remember correctly), before Urban turned them into a 12-0 team the next season.
