Just read up some more on it and most articles seem to think you are correct. Keep Castro and play Gattis elsewhere. A lot of opinions believe this could be the end of Fowler in Houston and Gattis would move to LF with Marisnick to Center.
Acquiring gattis definitely opens up a lot of potential trades for the Astros. It'll be fun to see how this plays out.

I love Fowler's combo of speed pop and OBP at the top of the lineup. I'm with you, I would kind of pissed if we dealt him unless it was a great deal off the Astros side

I like this move. Keep Castro at catcher, Fowler in Center and put Gattis in Left. I like how we might finally have an above adequate LF.

We definitely need a fowler type player in this lineup. I can already feel the breeze from all of the swinging strikes from all of the other guys, . We need that high OBP guy in the top of the lineup. But he is a free agent at the end of the season, only played 116 games last season (only played more than 135 games once in his career) and, by most accounts, isn't a great fielding CF. The article on the Crawfish Boxes about the trade today mentioned he might even cause a fuss if asked to play a corner infield spot this season instead of CF.
If the astros don't plan on extending his contract, they might as well trade him at his highest value. Why let him walk for nothing at the end of the season? They can start the season with him and see how the season shapes up then trade him around the deadline if the Astros are out of contention, but they'll be playing with fire by doing that. If his injury bug bites again an he misses any considerable time during the beginning of the season, his trade value plummets and we get next to nothing for him at the deadline.
We obviously need a player like him in the lineup right now but, unless they think they can win with him this year (we are still a year away from playoff contention, IMO), then I'd completely understand if they trade him away and won't be overly bitchy about it.
But, I also have no idea what his value is right now. Bottom of the rotation pitcher, maybe? He'd have to be included in another packaged deal for us to get any real value for him unless he plays lights out to start the season and we can move him at the deadline.
So who knows? I just wrote a novel just to say I have no idea what the Astros are thinking right now. Can't wait for baseball!
Edit: Astros reach contract agreement with Carter to avoid arbitration.

Sorry, but Marisnick is a better option in LF than Gattis. Heck, Gattis is really not much better than Carter in LF.
The key to the season is going to be Castro's spot in the lineup. If he rebounds and hits .270 or above, the lineup will be solid. If he (or his replacement) doesn't start hitting even a little, there is very little protection of your number 4, 5, and 6 hitters... they become a sink hole. Granted, they'll hit a ton of homers, but that OBP...

I think he meant a LF that's above adequate offensively. At least that's what I hope he meant.

Oh. Crap. I guess that would make more sense given the context.
My bad. I'm not really a dumbass, but I occasionally play one in real life.

I'm a huge Fowler fan to be honest and would definitely be on board for trying to extend him. That would take away the worry of him leaving after the season. The fact that he's been rumored in so many trades leads me to believe that they are leaning towards trying to move him rather than looking at an exstension.

Astros also got a RP in the trade with the braves, James Hoyt. Big boy who was out of baseball for a couple of years. But once he signed with the Braves, he flew through their minors. High K rate, but high walk rate too. Got shelled when he got to AAA last season, but was lights out in AA before getting promoted (other than the walk rate)
quote:
The 28-year-old Hoyt, meanwhile, is an interesting story. After going undrafted out of Centenary College of Louisiana, he began working on sailboats for a living before an independent league tryout got him back into baseball (via Baseball America’s most recent scouting report on Hoyt [subscription required]). Eventually, he was picked up by Atlanta at age 25. Hoyt rose through Atlanta’s ranks, compiling particularly impressive marks at the Double-A level in 2013 (1.82 ERA, 11.5 K/9, 4.2 BB/9). That earned him the No. 30 ranking on BA’s list of top Braves prospects, with BA praising his 94-96 mph fastball and a slider that could develop into a plus pitch.

Interesting. Could be a bit of depth for the bullpen. Maybe he's this years McHugh (but for the bullpen)?
Here's an article from 2013 about him.
quote:
Aside from his cleanliness, Botelho said already at this level (Class A-Advanced), Hoyt has two major league ready pitches – a 94 to 96 mile an hour fastball and an above average slider. "I think [if] he keeps doing what he's doing you're not going to see him in Lynchburg very long, Botelho added.
Before he makes the next move Botelho has him working on a number of things including his pick-off move, holding on a runner, logging some innings, getting consistent out of the stretch, and shutting down the running game. From spring training to now, Hoyt has developed quickly. His mound awareness has improved and he's made positive adjustments. "He's getting it," Botelho said.

I haven't weighed in yet on the Gattis trade yet.
I love the fact we got him. K numbers are high but we needed a power bat badly.
And I also love 2/3 of what we gave up to get him.
But damn I wanted to keep Folty. He's still so young and could have worked out his issues. I was for sure he was the future closer.
Oh well. I think we've now got a lineup 1-9 that could cause some serious problems for teams this season.
Gotta do something about starting pitching now. We really only have 3/5 of a rotation. 4/5 if you count Obie. And it's not the most solid 4/5 in the world.
Who else is still available that we could get?

Max Scherzer?
Also, Cole Hamels and David Price are rumored to be trade candidates. (Either one of them would require Springer in the deal, I'm sure... no thanks.)
And from MLBTradeRumors:
quote:
The Astros still have some money to spend, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, and the team is currently looking at both the starting pitching market and at corner infielders. Astros fans with visions of elite starters in their minds should temper those thoughts, however, as Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets that the club is thinking more along the lines of back-end starters such as Ryan Vogelsong and Kyle Kendrick.

Astros talking Carlos Corporan trade with Rangers
quote:
A mid-level prospect would be reasonable compensation for Corporan, a solid back-up with pop. He posted a .302 on-base percentage last season in 55 games and threw out 22 percent of runners, a bit below league average. The most games Corporan has played in a season is 64.

Corporan and fowler for Yu Darvish.
Make it happen Jeff.

Big rumor that Fowler is about to be traded to the Cubs for MLB players, not prospects.
