Take this for what its worth:

Richard Justice gave a Sirius radio interview this morning and talked a little about Houston. He said they were close to reaching an agreement on a trade for a starting pitcher. He didn't mention which pitcher and he guessed it would be for one of the Astros' catchers.

Hopefully it is someone solid. Almost impossible to win a pennant without good pitching.

Interesting. There was all that buzz about Hamels but I shudder to think what they would have to give up to land him.

He has a lot of experience and has been a good pitcher in the league. But his salary is pretty damn high.

Is he 22 million a year good though?

Yes. I just don't know if it's a good idea to gut the system for one front line guy at this point.

That is what I should have said. Is he worth a bunch of players and then still having to pay him 20 million a year..?

Got to wonder if they are even good enough at the major league level to benefit from Hamels.

I should be going to two division series this year. Angels and Mariners

Astros have reached a settlement with Nix

What are the details to this? Just money to Nix?

Any idea if this screws his NCAA eligibility?

Both players had scholarship offers to UCLA, and their eligibility is up to the NCAA. But considering both had negotiated deals and traveled to Houston for physicals and presumably press conferences (though there never was a press conference for either, obviously, when the deals fell through), their eligibility is up for debate. It is believed now that both top prospects will pitch at junior colleges instead.

Looks like just a cash settlement , yea.

Listening to Inside Pitch hosted by Casey Stern and Jim Bowden. One of them just mentioned that the rumor going around is that the Astros are willing to include Mark Appel in a trade package to land a major player if it made sense for them.

Hmm interesting that they would already possibly be willing to trade Appel.

That's just them throwing a wide net on off season conversation.

We need to go after wil Myers. I wouldn't give up Appel tho. No way you give up a number 1 pick before he makes it to the bigs

Padres are making moves. I am sure their fans are excited.

Anyways, don't you think it would take a lot to get him?

This season coming up we will hopefully be able to see what he's capable of. Ever since he left Lancaster he's been pitching a lot better.

Any more news? I know baseball free agency and what not can move a tad slow.

Obviously, I'm making no comparison....just thought that, even though I still hate this MFer, Chris Carter's 2nd half was on part with the AL MVP.

Hopefully Karter can keep that up. The second half of last season was the best he's ever played in his career, by a lot. I'm just hoping it wasn't an anomaly. I'm still just not completely bought in to him being a new player now, until he does it again this season.
